11.2 USB will not detect/recognize

I recently installed openSuse 11.2 on my Dell 700m. Since installing I have been scouring threads, google, etc to figure out how to get USB devices to be recognized.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

a default install of 11.2 will automatically detect and mount a USB
device very quickly after it is inserted…

if that is not happening then you probably have a faulty install for
some reason…perhaps due to a less than perfect install disk, did you
do this http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq before install? if not, then come
back and say so because i wanna give you several cites to get you
going in the right (and easiest) direction…

on the other hand, if you are booting with the device already plugged
in and then find you can’t use it, please answer these:

  • what kind of device is it?

  • what DE are you using (KDE/Gnome or other)?

  • how much experience do you have with this or other versions of Linux?

What sort of device?

What does

lsusb

show when the device is connected?

What sort of device?

This is what I get back from

with a logitech webcam and wireless hp mouse dongle instered into my two ports:

No, I didn’t try the “Check System Install” first. Should I have done that before installing Suse11.2? I am a Noob with linux–recently switched from XP.

I am using KDE.

It really does not see any device on all of your 4 USBusses. Either something is broken in your hardware or in openSUSE.

On the Forums main page there is a clear part saying: “** Information for New Users **”
You will find there among other usefull things: NEW Users - Suse-11.2 Pre-installation – PLEASE READ - openSUSE Forums. And also the openSUSE download pages where you get openSUSE advise to check after download and also the burned DVD (one bit wrong on a DVD is not important inside audio/video, but it spoils software).

yes absolutely, because if the install disk is not 100% perfect you
are destined to install broken software! check the disk now, if it
does not check perfect then see the following cites:
http://en.opensuse.org/Download_Help
http://tinyurl.com/yhf65pv
http://tinyurl.com/ycly3eg

i see your system is not seeing a mouse and webcam…i suggest you
check your install media, if it checks ok then unplug both the mouse
and webcam and boot up…then, (i GUESS you are using a laptop, say
what next time) is your built in touch pad mouse working?

if so, THEN plug in the wireless mouse and see if it gets detected…

for webcam see here: http://en.opensuse.org/Webcam

report back here with problems/questions…

you have a LOT of learning to do…be patient and precise…

I’m pretty sure that the hardware is fine… only because it still functions as a power supply. Following your advice I’ve downloaded a fresh version of 11.2 and have done a sumcheck… looks good, we’ll see what happens after reinstall

Yes, I’m using a laptop. The touch pad does work.
The disk I was using did come back with an error message when doing a “check system install”…

New download checksum came back as a correct match and .iso burnt to DVD was good when doing “check system install”

I have now tried installing through “Check system install”, with no improvement with the USB ports… and now again with a fresh installation and lsusb still shows:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Thank you for the links, they’re helpful! Do you have any more suggestions?

if it helps any, fstab is config this way:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD800VE-75HDT0_WD-WXE205228505-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD800VE-75HDT0_WD-WXE205228505-part7 /home ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 2
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

The /etc/fstab file is not relevant here.

Some questions:

1)Do you have windows installed on this machine? If so, do the ports work ok? You could also try a LiveCD to test with.

2)Do you have a memory stick that you could plug in? I think if you plugged in a memory stick or usb mouse, your usb devices should be registered and supported immediately. If not, then I wonder if the intenal usb power supply has been blown up…

  1. What does ‘rchal status’ report?

good question…either his USB is not working as expected OR he
still has a faulty install…(which he can learn by following your
advice of testing the USB ports with a live cd, memory stick or
installed dual boot)

This should show al devices connected regardless what kind of device it is. In USB al devices have a an ID (two parts maker:type) and lsusb shows them. Look here:

boven:~ # lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 15a9:0004

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 03f0:7e04 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet F4100 Printer series
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:0f0c Hewlett-Packard Wireless Keyboard and Optical Mouse receiver

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
boven:~ #

Not one storagedevice/disk amonst them. Even if Linux does not know what to do with them (does not have a driver) the USB standards let it read a lot of information and the 03f0:0f0c, etc. is an inportant part of it. When it is not shown, there isn’t something.

What does

dmesg

say?

And in a terminal (as root) do

tail -f /var/log/messages

then connect one of the devices and see if something is reported in the terminal.

(You can stop the trace in the terminal with Ctrl-C)
