11.2 M8 Minor Cosmetic Issues

I’ve noticed some minor cosmetic issues:

  1. on boot you can see the kernel load from grub for a couple of seconds until the boot/splash screen kicks in.

  2. The screen reverts to using some older video ram space while transitioning from KDM login to the desktop.

  3. While shutting down, you can see the init 6 occur for a few seconds until the splash screen kicks in.

  4. I had the KDE desktop lock up on me while I had a seamless Windows XP session running with virtualbox. Happened after I played a video on youtube. Firefox was still responsive but none of the KDE desktop controls were. I’m now running the latest virtualbox from factory and haven’t experienced this issue to date.

I’m using the NVIDIA binary driver 185.18.36 on a Dell E6400 laptop. Everything is working out of the box, even the wireless Intel adapter and built-in web cam with kopete.

init 6!?

Whoa there… thats too far out for my liking

That is normal, and it only shows for a second.

I think you are talking about when the system transitions from usplash to kdm loading. Again, this is normal behavior.

  1. While shutting down, you can see the init 6 occur for a few seconds until the splash screen kicks in.

I do not see this but I have seen it before. This could be caused by your graphics card and the speed of your system and amout of RAM you have might be a factor. Still, nothing wrong or broken.

I have had problems with Virtualbox from time to time. I don’t think it is anything specific with the milestone release thats causes problems. I have Virtualbox 3.0.6 installed and it is working alright.

OpenSuse boots up like I expect it to and I know that what is in place will work reliably.

No the transition from KDM to KDE SPLASH. This post is not meant for end users to comment on, its for dev and openSUSE marketing informational purposes.

All this depends on hardware. My old laptop used to show the loading of GRUB, new one does not, main machine does not.
2 Sempron machines do not show these, they show a second of console view just before starting kdm.
My son’s new home built machine does neither, it’s almost seamless from GRUB to desktop.

If you want to bring it to the attention of the developers, a better place to comment would be the factory mailing list, or Novell’s Bugzilla, although it doesn’t really sound like a bug.
