11.2 Installation problem- server connection issues?

I’m trying to install 11.2 on a machine that previously had 10.3 installed (Dell 490n, quad-core Xeon proc E5535 2.00GHz, 2 x 4MB L2Cache 1333MHz, 2x2 GB DDR2 ECC SDRAM). I backed up my data and tried to install 11.2 from a DVD that I downloaded/burned (and ran all the requisite checks). Here are the problems I’ve had:

  • I can get something to install from the DVD, but during installation, I get a “can’t connect to server error”. When I continue down this route, I get a semi-functional system, but when I try to repair it using the “Repair Installation” option on the DVD, I wind up in an endless loop that somehow seems to be related to a missing file /var/lib/rpm/Filemd5s. I also get errors about missing modules that are required for mkinitd. I manually configured my network settings and retried everything, but I wind up with the same result.

-I tried to do a network install. Downloaded/burned the cd, try the installation manually setting the network configuration, used 195.135.221.130 for the http server, and wind up getting a “no repository found” message.

Could my problems be related to something out of my control, like the way the network is configured on campus?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

What do you mean “I get a semi-functional system”??

What is your video card?

The video card is nVidia Quadro FX 3450, 256MB dual VGA or DVI

By semi-functional, I mean that I can log in and do things, but I don’t trust it and I don’t want to go on installing/compiling my other software if the os is all messed up or missing lots of things that I’ll have to track down later (I’m no LINUX expert, so when something goes wrong it takes me a long time to fix it). I was able to run an online update. Should I just trust the installation and move on?

My other issue is that the display is shifted to the left (1680x 1050). If I set the resolution to 1280 x 1024, I can see everything, but it looks terrible. If I go into the display preferences, it says that my monitor is “unknown”. It is just a Dell 22-inch flat panel monitor that’s a couple of years old.

Still don’t understand the reason you don’t trust it. What is not working?

For video did you install the NVIDIA drivers?

By not working, I mean there are all sorts of little things missing. For example, when I try to use the search tool, it isn’t working, and when I try to enable it, that doesn’t work, either.

I do have the nvidia driver installed. I’ve tried to configure the display with Sax2, but every time I reboot, it reverts to the old configuration.
