Just installed 11.2 and found out that ATI hates people with older cards I have a radeon x1600 so the driver doesn’t install.
Appearantly I have the opensource driver installed and SAX says 3D is enabled. When I run glxgears they show up perfectly. When I enable Compiz it works for about 2 or 3 seconds, the effects are there, but then it drops out back to the normal desktop. Same when I start World of Warcraft, I see the game and then it drops back to the desktop.
The opensource driver has 3D support for at least Compiz right? Is it even possible now to run Compiz? Or do I need to go back to 11.1?
After the #th reboot Compiz keeps working now. So that’s cool. As for gaming, I don’t think that is going to work with this card any more… And that’s a shame I think… Next time I’m buying Nvidia since they seam to still support the older cards.

I swapped out my x1900XT 512 for a nvidia 6600le 128 I had lying around,
works in both suse 11.2 and my hackintosh. What a shame.
AMD/ATI are making docs available and assisting FOSS driver effort. The commercial drivers are always going to drop support of older cards, because there’s financial incentive to encourage upgrade. Old stuff tends to be supported better by FOSS drivers, because what are often simple small source changes, do get made without the obligations of QA increasing costs.
