11.1 Unable to print - 5012 device communication error

Hi all,
Finally I decided to write this post. I tried to solve my problem for about ~8 hours with no results so I’m desperate :frowning: I’m even more angry, because some time ago, my HP 1315 (all-in-one dev.) work perfectly with suse - just plug’n’play. I had to reinstall opensuse because my old 5-years Seagate got more and more bad sectors. I wish that I didn’t check my hp after clean install, because I don’t know what is source of my problem

If I want to print sth, I’ve got error:

Device communication error 5012

There is many forums/pages/bugs report that solution is simple, add self to lp group - i’m in lp group now and it’s not work for me. What is strange - when I started fight with my printer I had this error too, but Align cartridges (print heads) wizard normally printed this page. I uninstall/reinstall various packages - diffrent hplip package, cups, sane back~ and frontends, xsane etc. and now I’m unable to print this page, test page, not even scan (before I wan able to do this). Sometimes Supplies tab is grayed out.

hp-check -t:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine
if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built
HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and
run-time dependencies).

Maybe this is problem. I’m using Virtualbox (updated to 3.0.8 r5318 on this disk) and I read this page: #3143 (VirtualBox 2.1.2 kills USB printing via hplip on OpenSUSE 11.1 → fixed in SVN) - VirtualBox](http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3143) I don’t know how to fix it, I have no virtualbox rule in /etc/udev. I made chown :lp -R /dev/bus/usb, but after reboot there is vboxusers again

Two days ago I want to run my Chinese webcam, so I installed the newest gspca drivers. When I try to install vloopback driver I’ve got disagrees about versions (see my (MattPal) comment here. Maybe this is related with my printer problems? I thought that there is problem with all usb “subsystem”, but my mouse, keyboard and Bluetooth dongle works perfectly.

Thanks in advance, Matthew.

Ok, after a few minutes testing, I noticed that I can scan. But sometimes I must wait about half minute before scanimage/xsane starts.

This is output from /var/log/messages:

“Zasoby chwilowo niedostępne” is same to “Resource temporarily unavailable”
So this is permission related or driver bug?

Solved, but my printer (/dev/bus/usb/003/003) must have 0666 instead 0644 chmod. But why? I’m in lp group, device also is. What else must be in lp? Cups daemon?

I discovered that the hp-setup (no parameters) GUI and hp-toolbox both set the printer URI to “hp:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?zc=HP547597” rather than to “hp:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?ip=192.168.0.31” as it should be. On Lucid you can go to Mainmenu>System>Administration>Printing (system-config-printing if you need to install it with Synaptic) and change this. Right click on the printer icon, select Properties and edit the URI box. For the printer (not for a printer/fax) you can also set the URI to “socket://<your printer URL>:9100” and it will work. However, if you have a printer/fax you need to use “hp:/net/Photosmart_C6100_series?zc=HP547597”.](http://goo.gl/maoapk) Also the fax device (the icon Properties) must have a Make/Model of “HP Fax hpcups”. This cannot be changed with system-config-printing. The only way I found to get the fax to work was to use

hp-setup -i 192.168.0.31

or to use the
Code:
hp-toolbox
GUI. The toolbox sets the URI wrong, but it can be corrected in system-config-printing. The Model/Make parameters are set correctly by toolbox. Note that my printer URL is 192.168.0.31. Yours will be different.

I am about to try this same setup on Precise Pangolin 12.04.

Hi, welcome

Did you notice you’re replying to an almost 7 year old thread?
And, that being able to send a fax is a nice feature, but requires people to be able to receive fax messages, which hardly anybody can these days?

Closing thread.
