11.1 seems to boot only into level 3

greetings all
just installed 11.1 … no problems … install went smoothly … this a.m. i wanted to boot it, but i only get into the commandline mode … kde4 won’t start up … if i type kde at the prompt, i get:
can’t open display

startkde: shutting down
warning: connect () failed: no such file or directory
error: can’t contact kdeinit
startkde: running shutdown scripts …
sprop: unable to open display
usage:xprop -options …] [format [dformat]] atom] …
where options include:
-grammar

startkde: done
…:~>

any suggestions? … theo

start a normal boot
if you arrive at login prompt, login with your user name and password, then type

startx

if that does not work, report back

okay … i wished i could copy it but it’s on another machine … try to paraphrase as best as possible:
…:~> startx

i’m toast, aren’t i? … theo

At the boot screen. Pause the boot by moving the down arrow, then back up to the default boot. But now press backspace, it should delete any text where you can see VGA= or other kernel arguments
Remove all text and now type just the number:
3
and hit enter

at the login type your user name and then password
now type:
su
then the root password

now type this:

sax2 -r -m 0=vesa

(N.B. the 0 is a zero not a letter)
reboot

try startx again if you still get a CLI login

report back

it booted, but now the graphic option for my monitor (1400x900) is gone, and my screen looks messed up …
theo

Hello !
Ok, now try to open the yast screen config tools ,and set the proper resolution…You’ll be able to test it before agreeing with it.

I had a similar problem using a live-cd, with an intel card.

Bye bye

Looks like you need the nvidia driver, which you had previously but it was not correctly installed or updated or . . .

See here NVIDIA - openSUSE

thanks everyone … already tried yast, but my resolution (1440x900) is not an option … shall try the driver reinstall now … theo

Yes the vesa driver is pretty rubbish really. Get the nvidia driver installed as per the link mingus gave you.
