11.1 Rant?

3pm Friday afternoon I started my upgrade from 11.0 to 11.1 by way of a fresh install, now after numerous interruptions, not least some sleep it is done to my satistaction.

It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t helped by the fact that both (!) of my DVD writers packed up (the burning of the iso and checking thereof was done on another machine [mistake?]). Eventually I installed directly from the iso (impressed? I was!).

Once I had the O/S installed, I seemed to stagger from one problem to another, sound -> no sound -> bad sound -> no sound -> sound; twinview video -> no twinview -> twinview; no compiz -> compiz but no window manager -> no compiz ; X -> no X -> X; event sounds -> no event sounds.

I was tempted at times to turn the air blue. By 5am Saturday I had updated most of the system and got most things working except for Compiz under Gnome. In order to get this far I had to trash my /home/me profiles/configuration - 11.1 Gnome 2.24 seemed to be rather unhappy with them (as root - no problem because it was always a default environment (?) ).

As 11.1 comes with Compiz “built in” I spent Saturday tweaking things (xorg.conf) to try to get it working, but all I managed was to screw X time and time again.

Sunday was spent downloading Compiz etc and…KDE (slow internet connection)

I have just completed these downloads and found that at last my Gnome environment is basically back as it was (except for some rather large and ugly white lines deliniating the tool bars). As I had downloaded KDE 4.2 (I suspected perhaps wrongly that Gnome had new problems with Compiz) I have spent 15 mins trying it out.

a) Isn’t it incredibly easy to login to OpenSuse using a different desktop?
b) KDE is the desktop I have been hungering after all this time!
c) KDE is brilliant!
d) KDE is rather incredible
e) KDE !!
f) !!!
g) I think I have converted

So this is not a rant, rather a bugger me I should have been using KDE all along, BUT if I was to moan (heaven forbid!), the 11.1 upgrade/install/get working wasn’t easy…having got there fine, but getting there was fraught.

Well here I am 11.1 with my favourite OS and “the adventure continues” (sorry), but with KDE (gratuitous rubbing of hands in general excitement).
