Hi. I have re-installed 11.1 and am using Kde3.5. With my previous Kde4 install, i had dragged my music files from a seperate drive (Link To), into the /home/music folder. I use xbmc mostly, and neither xbmc nor amarok had any problems using the links, but they cannot see the files with Kde3.5.
Checking the folder i can see all the links there and if i click to open one, i can see all the .mp3 files there, but XBMC doesn’t and neither does Amarok so it can’t build a collection.
Help required please

First: /home/music is not a proper place for your music. /home is for users. What you need now is to check the permissions of the folder. Can you post the output of the next command (to be executed in a terminal window ?
command: ls -ld /home/music
From what you describe it’s a matter of permissions.

I have over 100GB of music which i prefer to be on a separate drive. Using ‘Link To’ takes seconds, copying across the files takes hours (not literally but you know what i mean), not only that, linking the files worked with Kde4. I haven’t been able to ‘Browse’ directly to the separate drive within either xbmc or amarok.
Where would you recommend i place my music if not in the /home/music folder/

Is the separate drive like a external usb? or a Internal HD partition?
Whatever the case, you should be able to point your music player to the drive/partition and away you go. It would need to be accessible and with r/rw access.
su terminal and:
fdisk -l
will list all your drives and partitions
file:
/etc/fstab
will tell us what you have mounting at boot.
Hi. The hard drive is a seperate 750GB internal Sata drive. I can access it without problems as i have been able to copy files both to and from the drive (i used ntfs-config).

I had another go at it using Kaffeine and can access the music on the seperate drive, but Kaffeine doesn’t order the files, but rather just lists the whole lot in expanded view.
I like xbmc because it just shows each groups folders which i can then click on to acces the tracks within.

So how is amarok dealing with what you have?
Amarok doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t build up a collection. This is odd because it worked with Kde4 install, i haven’t done anything different i.w.o setting up or installation. Perhaps i should go back to Kde4.

Try removing the old hidden amarok folder (we assume you are using amarok 1.4 from Packman?)
The folder will be in the .kde/share/apps

That has enabled the option to access the other hard drive and amarok is building up the collection. So far it’s got to 25% over the past 10 minutes.
Seeing it take this long to build up a collection, it might be quicker to copy across the files into the linux drive.

Hmm, i don’t know if amarok does a recursive scan during the collection building, but it’s getting slower and slower. It’s at 34% after 30 minutes and i’m getting the impression it’s taking the mickey :\
I’ll go back (or is that forward), to Kde4. Kde3.5 just seems so much more fluid on my system, a bit like Xp Vs Vista

Just an update. I just came back from being out and amarok is still building the collection. It’s at 75% and taken around 3 hours so far. I guess something is a bit off.
