11.1 is out but how will/did you download it?

What is the fastest way of downloading openSUSE to you.
Those lost minutes if choosing the slower method can mean more stress

I am using kTorrent. At the moment 23 MB down and 37 MB up !

Using Aria 2. See: openSUSE Lizards Ā» Best Way to Download openSUSE

It says it will do it within 1 1/2 hours.

The Metalink is not in your poll list.

I do not have a fast internet. So direct download cannot happen. it is Torrent for me.

Iā€™m using a metalink and itā€™s flyinā€™ down the wire. 90 minutes to completion. However, I donā€™t know if Iā€™m getting the right file. The link to the metalink page came up with an error, page not found. I looked at the info page for metalinks and that gave me a sample link to look at the code behind metalinks. When I clicked it, the download started.

It says DVD 11.1 (nothing about GM) and I think it was available on the 10th? How do I know Iā€™ve got the right one?

My metalink says openSUSE-11.1-DVD-i586.iso and that seems to be correct. GM is only a way to say that it is the final one, nothing to incorporate in the name itself. When you use the name in the page I mentioned earlier (http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/iso/openSUSE-11.1-DVD-i586.iso) it should be OK. Less then 45 mins for me now.

You have to Choose metalink, donā€™t you? I mean DownThemAll or aria2 wonā€™t automatically pick up a metalink, right?

Using DownThemAll, Iā€™ve got a bit less than an hour to go. I installed this Firefox extension and also aria2, just for todayā€™s download extravaganza, so Iā€™m not familiar with them yet. I practiced a download of a live CD last week and dTa seems to seed a torrent when its finished. Since aria2 doesnā€™t have the same kind of gui, Iā€™m not sure if it also begins to seed.

Anyway, if it does seed, Iā€™m leaving it open.

whereā€™s the ā€œI didnā€™t download it cuz Iā€™m skipping itā€ option?

Got it!!! 90 minutes, almost to the second. Aria2 is seeding now. I wiill let it run for a while.

As long as Metalink is not in the Poll list I will not vote. I never got it so fast.

In all the excitment I forgot to add metalink :shame:
sorry

standard is down rotfl!

Normally I use the torrentā€¦ but I just could not wait!! Pumping the last mbā€™s over (20 mins to go!).

Iā€™ll be going with the standard method using DTAOneClick.

So you must have liked RC1 then, but how are you going to get GM :)?

First off, I am new here and this is my first post. I decided to register because of my experience downloading this morning. Also for any future linux questions.

I have never run linux on any of my PCā€™s that I use. I do have a DLink network drive that has linux installed and have run various scripts and commands.

I was going to try opensuse on a liveCD a few days ago when I found out about linuxmint and others. But since a new version was about to be released I waited. I did try linuxmint gnome version on livecd and I was suprised at how easy it is to use compared to typing in commandsā€¦

I first started downloading 11.1 with a torrent and uTorrent. It was slooooowwww. Max download was 300kb/sec, average was below 100 and was to take 5+ hours. It also crashed my internet connection (cable modem), my router, and my computer a few times. After numerous reboots I had enough of the torrent. It was my impression that torrent downloads of this file size were faster than direct. Yes, the port is forwarded and I have it tweaked as other files have taken ~20-30 minutes. Not with this fileā€¦

So I went back to the opensuse download page and got the 32bit 11.1 kde4xxx.iso file directly in firefox. WOWā€¦I averaged around 800kb/sec with max of 850. It took me 12 minutes.

Had I known all of this I would have done it this way in the first place. Instead, I lost time, had to reboot everything numerous times. I would have had it up and running. But I had to go to lunch.

It is now burned to disc and I am going to first try the livecd before installing dual boot with XP. Wish me luck!

Wellā€¦ wishing you luck!! as aslo welcome!

If you are new to openSUSE there are some things that need to be installed a bit differently.

Here is a good read to give a better understanding of openSUSE : Concepts - openSUSE

Also, for multimedia : Restricted Formats/11.1 - openSUSE-Community

There are many wiki pages you will find on openSUSE.org to help you with specific subjects.

Hope you enjoy!

I started my 64 bit DVD on the torrent before leaving the house this morning. I could have done an HTTP download, but would rather have my file out there to help others on the torrent.

That was the GM, including the opensuse signature.
Itā€™s still available, including timestamp, at Opensuse 11.1 i586 DVD (download torrent) - TPB and Opensuse 11.1 x86-64 DVD (download torrent) - TPB >:)

i went over my cap a while ago, so my speed is dialed back to dial up speed until the end of the month, which means I am downloading the live cd from a mirror, should have it in another 17 hours rotfl!
