I’m trying to install 11.1 on an acer ferrari 4000 laptop. When I boot the dvd it stops responding to the keyboard once at the grub menu so I’m unable to do anything. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be happening or how to install 11.1 on this laptop?
Try these boot options
acpi=off noapic
if they don’t work, just hit F3 and select
text
see how you get on.
If still problems, consider trying a live cd install.
Where do I enter the boot options? When I boot off of the DVD or the Live CD when the first GRUB menu comes up asking if I’d like to boot off the disk or install I can’t select anything it won’t take any input from the keyboard. Does the same thing on the DVD or Live CD. I’ve tried using a USB keyboard with no success as well.
I’ve done text installs before so I’m comfortable with that I just don’t know how to get there, do I hit F3 as it’s booting the disc or after?
I appreciate the help.
edit: I believe when I get to the menu it is locking up completely. On the Live cd there is the boot options field and the cursor is not blinking, it also isn’t reading the disc and it sounds like my processor fan is running at full speed. I had a similar issue with ubuntu a while back and had to use the alternate install cd which was text based. Is there anything similar for opensuse?
Boot the dvd and if you can get to the Installation option by moving the down arrow, you will see that the timer stops.
Now with your keyboard just type as I said:
The typing should display lower down (this is where you can put kernel arguments)
If you find the keyboard not working to do this, try this option:
‘If the graphical boot menu doesn’t show or freezes, try press and hold Shift on the keyboard when booting the installation media. This starts the text-mode boot menu instead.’
Holding shift worked, thanks for the help!
I am finally taking the plunge to upgrade from 10.3 to 11.1…
Unfortunately, I can not get the DVD to respond to the keyboard. I tried holding the shift key as per a prior suggestion. I tried moving the DVD to another drive. I checked that the USB keyboard is fully plugged in… No joy.
The install DVD boots up and sits at the Boot from Hard Drive prompt. I can not select the Installation menu item no way, no how. System MB is a ABit KN9 Ultra…
So the little wheel on the Boot from Hard Drive spins and then I get the system telling me that it is booting from the local drive.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
–Eric
Ah nothing like the Eureka that immediately occurs after posting a question/reply…
In my BIOS setup I had to change the keyboard from OS supported to BIOS supported. (Phoenix Award BIOS)
Et voilà!
So perhaps this will help others faced with the same problem.
