11.1 don't like my CRT monitor! Load goes into inf. loop...

Nor do I, but it’s a big’un. And PCLOS on another machine don’t like the cheap KVM switch I bought, so the dinosaur CRT gets a reprieve from the landfill. (hold the eco-lesson please)

So I’m tryin’ to load 11.1 on a 3rd machine, and it looks like the splash screen on the Live boot says 1024 x 768. I tried twice to get it loaded, but no-go on the vids. It gets near the end of the load to display X-server/desktop, and then some different checkerboard patterns showed each time.

Then a black screen, with a black flash, over and over, like it’s in a load loop of some sort.

I saw another post about this a few weeks ago, but didn’t bookmark it.

Help?

Any body got an idea on this?

It seems the default monitor config is too much for the CRT…

that is what the forums advanced search page is for…

if you don’t immediately find that thread you saw, try searching on
the words:

black screen

Thanks MP…

There is no better resource hound [searcher] than myself - you can bank that.

It turned out to be hardware…

…for which problem I still have no solution.

I have a LiveCD in, and I’m at the splash screen. I need a cli to configure X when it comes up.

Help?

OK; I added vga=ask to the boot option in ‘failsafe settings’. Now I have 14 video mode choices, or ‘scan’ for additional choices.

Any help? Feedback? Hello?

EDIT:
‘Scan’ crashed it.

There maybe, I say maybe another solution.
Have you tried Yast> Hardware> Graphics card & Monitor
In Sax2 the Monitor section there’s an option to change the monitor. Click change see if your dinosaur is in there if it is that might be what’ll get what your after.
If not & if you are in an economic position to do so replace the dinosaur.
I won’t tell 'em if it goes into the landfilllol!

I have a Live CD in, and I’m at the splash screen. I need a cli to configure X when it comes up.

The reason I have a Live CD in is so I can install SuSE.

> The reason I have a Live CD in is so I can install SuSE.

most everyone here recommends to NOT install from a Live CD (for lots
of good reasons…one, like it might not have your dinosaur in its
truncated install script; another is you are probably trying to start
with KDE4 which is VERY unstable, and as a new guy, you should [in my
opinion] avoid it for now while you are getting your footing…THEN
add it when it becomes more stable…from the DVD you may install the
very stable KDE3)…

and, if you have not yet, please read the entire thread which begins
at
http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/401696-newbies-suse-11-1-pre-installation-please-read.html

please read it EVEN if you don’t consider yourself a Linux noob…
pay particular attention to the requirement to check the media with
md5sum (i say, because your problem might be as simple as a
slightly scrambled CD)…

Good tips MP! You’re right I’m certain on some driver modules not bein’ present on the Live burn.

But alas MP, practice what you preach. (about readin’ carefully, and careful searchin’)

Yes, I suppose possibly that my burn scrambled ONLY the load script for my CRT, and nothing else for 2 other machines that I got it loaded on, but what do YOU think is the chance of that?

But keep the responses comin’! I’m a good filter too!

>> So I’m tryin’ to load [install] 11.1 on a 3rd machine, …

that line can be read in more than one way, example:

So I’m tryin’ to load [install] 11.1 on a 3rd machine (and have
succeeded twice already), and it looks like the splash screen on the
Live boot says 1024 x 768. or

So I’m tryin’ to load [install] 11.1 on a 3rd machine (and dang, i’m
having the SAME problem on this one), and it looks like the splash
screen on the Live boot says 1024 x 768. or

whereas this line is closer to unambiguous:

“I have used this install disk successfully on two other machines, and
it looks like the splash screen on the Live boot says 1024 x 768 for
this one”

Yes, MP can read it that way if he wants, and adds a few words.

One disk that won’t load on 3 different machines leaves room for exactly zero questions. ZERO.

Now, if you can help me get an install on my third machine, feel free. If not, filling my thread with semantics questions deters others from wading through the mire.

Thanks again. (your guess that the CRT module might not be on the Live burn was helpful info)
