11.1 difference to 11,0

Hey Forum,

I wrote a little post about me in the other subforum, which contains that I use openSuSe 11.0 and I was asked whether it was deliberate to install 11.0 and not 11.1

so I want you to ask what the difference is and also where I can usually find information about such things?

11.0 to 11.1 seems to be a small difference because it’s only 0.1 more :X (it’s a very bad type of thinking, I know).
May it be, that 11.0 is kinda beta-version, and 11.1 is the stable one?

btw. I used the search engine but I didn’t find anything (maybe I used wrong tags?)

EDIT:
(I didn’t meant to make a double post, but the edit function doesn’t work)

By the way, I have a few more questions, should I make new Treads for them or ask them here? It could help others if I make extra posts, couldn’t it?

like:
what is the difference between the “default” option and “pae” option on my boot splash screen?
Why doesn’t Compiz work? It’s installed and seems to be working, but nothing happens when I use the key combination
How can I put the windowlabel back down, I can only put it back with mini programs, but it becomes a square form

and so on

11.0 was a “dot oh” release which in IT terms has a stigma of being
less-tested since new things go in there, but whether or not that was
really true, I don’t know. 11.1 has a lot of new things as well. 11.0
came with KDE 4 for the first time and 11.1 continues with a later,
more-stable version. I believe both versions had new builds of Gnome as
well. Later versions of every other package in the world will be in
11.1 of course so there may be additional stability there. Compiz
(graphical stuff) I’m told is smoother in 11.1 given the same hardware.
More drivers for more hardware are included I’m also told which should
help stability and ease of installation on more platforms. You could
try searching BugZilla for bugs in OpenSuSE that were fixed in 11.1 and
that may give you other things that changed from a bug point of view. I
believe both 11.0 and 11.1 come with Pulse Audio which is a new sound
system from everything before with a lot of new features.

‘default’ is the default regular kernel and ‘pae’ is Physical Address
Extension meaning the kernel does some magic to let you use more RAM
than 32-bit supports normally. It also implies a performance hit so if
you have a new box with lots of RAM that can use 64-bit you may prefer
that options since it natively supports a lot more RAM. The downside to
using 32-bit is the limitation of 32-bit numbers which PAE is meant to
overcome as well as possible without going to 64-bit, though 64-bit
hardware has been around for years (I bought my first 64-bit box five or
six years ago).

Good luck.

Allright,

thanks for the help rotfl!

The next thing I will do is burn 11.1 on a DVD and update my system.
I hope some of my problems will be fixed after this, but be sure I’m going to write down my new questions in the Forum tomorrow :stuck_out_tongue:
