11.1 and Gramps

I’ve just installed 11.1 over 11.0 and found that Gramps application does
not start up, just a bouncing cursor for a while and then nothing. I
thought I’d try un-installing then re-installing it via Yast but Yast
couldn’t un-install it. Any ideas as to what I should try next?

I’m using KDE 3.5. Gramps is a Gnome application but runs happily on KDE -
or did till now.

Sorry I can’t help you rigt now.
I’m about to switch to 11.1, too. (from 10.0)

Is Gramps in the standard repositories, now ?

If it is, I can perhaps make a quick install on my laptop, and try Gramps
there.

The problem is mainly down to a missing module, _bsddb, and is a known bug.
See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441088. So it’s a matter of
waiting for the update.

Still doesn’t explain why Gramps won’t un-install.

Same problem! I think it’s urgent, because there are some other applications, which need python - for example ‘backintime’ and ‘devede’.

This bug is labelled “resolved”. From my point of view, a bug isn’t resolved
until the fix is distributed.

Elsewhere I saw a message claiming that installation of Python-2.6.0-3.2
from the openSUSE factory resolved the problem. The version of Python
running on my 11.1 system is 2.6.0-2.16. I have had no success in
searching for 2.6.0-3.2. If it is for real, I would dearly love to be
able to obtain it so that I can finally get GRAMPS running on my system.

http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/
I added this to my repositories and updated gramps. Be sure to un-enable it
straight afterwards!

Thanks much. I updated and un-enabled. Now have Python 2.6.0-4.1.
Haven’t been able to install GRAMPS, though, as when I try in YasT,
nothing is found for gramps. The repository as I have it in YaST is:

/repositories/home:/rbos/openSUSE_11.1/

Bugzilla only tracks the developer’s point of view. It is after all, a bug tracking database, not an issue tracking database. It’s up to the distribution system to send the fix out. As you saw, you may have to get it from factory.

Did you try the Webpin search? Here is what I found. You don’t have the right repo added. That’s why yast can’t find it. GRAMPS is in the Education repo. That link will give you a 1-click install. Since I didn’t install it, I don’t know if the bug is resolved in the 1-click.

I used it awhile back, on older versions, until I hit a brick wall. Maybe I should get it installed and get to work again.

Richard Bos hasn’t updated the OpenSUSE version of GRAMPS for a while - 3
updates behindhand. I installed 11.1 over 11.0 so didn’t have to re-install
Gramps. I suggest using the 11.0 repository instead of 11.1. I’ve tried the
3.0.4 rpm from the Gramps site but had no success with that although I
haven’t tried since updating Python.

I hadn’t tried the Webpin search because I’d never heard of it. Also,
according to Gramps, the rbos repository is the official one! Why can’t
people get their bleepin’ acts together?

My first attempt this morning to get Gramps from the Education repository
was a failure as the site you get if adding by repository points to the
wrong site - I think, it’s a different site anyway. What is going on?
Adding the site found from Webpin by URL has resulted in a successful
update - hooray!

Anyway, thanks for your help. After three weeks of trying to get help here
and from Gramps, yours is the first posting saying where to find the latest
version of Gramps.

Thanks again,

Graham

From Prexy’s post, the latest correct repository is
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Education/openSUSE_11.1/

Note that this isn’t the Education repository you get when adding via
repository and has to added by URL.

I’ve updated the Gramps wiki to point to the correct repository.

Well, that repository gave me 3.0.4 alright, but that is vastly
different from 2 and appears to have no way to load a .grdb file created
with version 2, so I uninstalled it. So it is at least possible to
uninstall it. The install seems to have had some unwanted consequences.
One thing I notice since is that my fonts on Thunderbird, which I was
satisfied with, are now different.

Now to see about getting two via the 11.0 repository or whatever.

If you want to update to 3.0.4, I think you’ll need to export your tree from
2 as XML and then open it with 3.

Thanks. I now have 2 installed from the 11.0 repository. I did that by
editing my original 11.1 URL for RBos. Your Wiki page now appears only
to reference the Education repository for 11.1 and version 3. Does that
leave users of 10.3 and 11.0 in the dark?

Probably! I’ve now updated it to include 11.0 and 10.3.

I made the mistake of suggesting the wiki page should be updated and was
told that, as a SUSE user, it would be best if I did it. Ought to teach me
to keep quiet in future - but I doubt it will.

That’s good, because if there are others who need 2.2 for openSUSE 11.1,
they will apparently have to use the 11.0 repository. XML backup
generated per your suggestion, and Upgrade Wiki page referenced. So
I’ll give GRAMPS 3.0.4 another whirl.

I have always kept a .ged file as the backup of my data. I did so because every program seems able to use it. Now that gramps is so grumpy, I’m glad that I did.

Following this thread, I gave gramps 3.0 a whirl and, sure enough, it won’t start for me either. What I’ve done until this gets resolved is install PAF 5.2 via Crossover. It works. If you missed out on the free download of Crossover, WINE might work with PAF.
