11.1 (64, kernel 2.6.27.23-0.1-default) misidentifies wireless card intel 5300agn as 5100agn. this error shows up in my installation of 11.1 (64) from retail dvd on a thinkpad x301, but I (and you) can replicate this error also with the live CD (that you can download from Software.openSUSE.org , Index of /distribution/11.1/iso )
aside, this is only the first of the 2 or 3 issues I am trying to clear up to get my wireless card to work. it seems it is falsely reported to work out of the box. strangely, I can see surrounding networks on scanning, but cannot connect to any, even unencrypted ones, not with (k)networkmanager, not with yast, not with iwconfig/dhclient

You need to install the compat-wireless package, or 2.6.3{0,1}
kernels. The Intel people have made many, many changes since 2.6.27
and your device is more likely to work with a later kernel. Note:
These changes are usually not ported back to older kernels due to
changes in the underlying kernel.
I thought it has been reported working for 11.1 (which equals 2.6.27). I bought my hardware based on these reports. Who does this erroneously reporting? Is there any reliable info on opensuse out there? How do I update to 2.6.30? I recently did run online update, and my kernel was updated from 2.6.27.7 or so to 2.6.27.23.

I have no idea who reports the wrong data. I don’t use Intel wireless
devices. I do know that the Intel development process is not as good
as other drivers. They keep their changes internal until they pass
regulatory tests. As a result, their external testing is minimal and a
lot of code has problems in the outside world.
Kernel 2.6.30 is not in the standard distribution. I’m not sure which
repository has it, but using it would cause problems with your
graphics driver if you are using either the NVidia or ATI driver.
2.6.27.23 is not the latest kernel for 11.1. 2.6.27.25 is the latest.
I have the 5300AGN working on 11.1. It “just works” with the kernel (albeit its speed could be faster). I did not have to “tune” anything on either KDE-3.5.10 nor KDE-4.1.3. I selected the SSID, the encryption, entered the pass phrase, and it connected.
I think the 5100AGN does work for users with the 2.6.27 kernel (I’m certain I have read of success stories). I recommend you put ALL settings back to the ORIGINAL defaults, and then simply focus on SSID, encryption method and pass phrase. It should be that simple (and it is that simple on the 5300AGN on my Dell Studio 15 laptop).

Have you configured it? From what others are saying, it should “just
work”.
googling for ‘“direct probe responded” “authentication with ap” “timed out”’ shows that a number of other people have the same issue.
I tried everything, different wireless card (a linksys wusb54gc), different operating system (ubuntu 9.04, 8.10, live cd, 2.6.28, 2.6.27), different routers in different places, un/encryption, channels, ABGN, disabling blutooth, network-manager, yast network settings, iwconfig, wicd … nothing.
there is a major bug in the kernel!!!

same with 11.1 32 bit live CD. shows 5100agn, and get same connection error “associating with AP timed out”
ubuntu live CD 9.04 and 8.10 correctly identified the card as 5300agn, although I receive the same connection error. ( #518545 - hwdata: pci.ids contains the wrong description for device 8086:4236 - Debian Bug report logs](http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518545) )
strangely, the PCI ID, or UID, reported by opensuse is 8086_4236

Why does my intel 5300 agn work and yours does not? That suggests to me there are different versions of the 5300 agn, or we are doing things different.
My intel 5300 agn is on a Dell Studio 1537 laptop, running a 32-bit openSUSE-11.1 with the KDE-3.5.10 desktop. The Dell Studio 1537 laptop is a 64-bit PC, but I elected at the time (back in Nov 2008) to go with a 32-bit openSUSE.
so strange, I can connect to the trendnet tew-432brp router that I just bought ($30), fine. even with WPA and with SSID not broadcast. I had a hint that trendnet may work from my old roommates trendnet working with opensuse 10.3 (2.6.22.5), but linksys did not work either back then with my 3945abg.
many other routers I tested in the bestbuy store do not work including my linksys wrt610n.
what is the difference in routers that the kernel wireless driver dislikes???
I am currently looking on each single setting of the 2 routers. did set my N router to only use G, and everything else also the same. still cannot connect to my $150 linksys router.
We use a speedport router W503V at home. From T-Online. Thankfully its easy to configure even though all the menu’s are in German, and I don’t speak German … babelfish gets a lot of use from me in terms of translating technical terms for routers from German to English.
Milestone6 of 11.2 will be out on monday. I’m hopeful it will be less buggy than milestone5, and since it has the 2.6.31 kernel (where there are supposed to be many wlan fixes for the Intel WLAN) I’ll see about giving the liveCD a trial on our family laptop with the Intel 5300AGN.

The adherence to standards differs from device to device. The latest
compat-wireless has the latest drivers from Intel and should be good.
If possible, please use wireshark or kismet on another computer and
grab the stuff in the air during authentication and authorization for
both a router that works, one that does not.
I just tested the live CD of 64-bit openSUSE-11.2 build 0235 (which I believe is milestone-6) on my Dell Studio 1537 laptop with the Intel 5300AGN. While milestone-5 was a disaster, milestone-6 worked ! The network icon in the lower right corner did not work, but I was able to to YaST > Network > Network Devices and disable the app in the lower right corner and then configure the wireless via YaST (all I had to do in YaST was enter ssid, select user authorized to connect setting (or something like that), select wpa-personal, enter pass phrase) and “it just worked”.
I think the 64-bit openSUSE-11.2 build 0235 (milestone-6) works better with the Intel 5300AGN than my 32-bit openSUSE-11.1, but that is very subjective after only 15 minutes of playing.

Considering the number of Intel patches that are posted on the
wireless mailing list, I would expect a lot of improvement from 2.6.27
to 2.6.31.
