1024x768 resolution instead of 1280x1024

Hi!

I have my configuration in 1280x1024 px (when I run sax -r it displays that) However my screen is displayed in a 1024 x 768 resolution.

Sometimes (I don’t know why and it’s very strange) once in 20, the system is in 1280x1024 (and those time I haven’d done anything).

But generaly is 1024x768 px, but It has to be 1280x1024.

any suggesion ?

What can i do to get the real 1280x1024 ?

Thanks

Best regards

Agustin

What video card are you using?

If it’s an nvidia, try “nvidia-settings” from a console inside your GUI. “su” to become root.

*I’m quiet new to suse linux. What do you mean with: “try “nvidia-settings” from a console inside your GUI.” (su… I undesrstand… I used sometimes)
*

Please tell us more about your system such as:

  1. The PC you’re using
    A.32bit or 64Bit
    B.Video card
    2.What version of suse 10.3,11.0,11.1 & What DE(Desktop Environment) gnome,KDE, or other
Tell us these things so we have a better idea of how to help you.

Assuming that you have the KDE desktop:

  1. In the K-Menu, under Applications, select "System -> Terminals -> Konsole. Once the console starts, use “su” to become root.

  2. Now that you’re root, enter “nvidia-settings.” A graphical interface will come up that you can use to try different settings.

Note that this also assumes that you’re using an NVidia graphics card. Obviously, if you’re not, this won’t work.

There are other ways to run “nvidia-settings;” for example, it may be in your K-menu. The problem is that it may not run as root, and I’m loathe to have you log into KDE itself as root (that’s generally a bad idea).

The reason for these precise instructions, though, are twofold: first, nvidia-settings has be run as root if you want it to save any changes and second, it MUST be started “inside” the graphical desktop.

By the way, sagemta’s questions are important, too, especially if this doesn’t work. Have you got a 64-bit system, and if so, did you install the 64-bit Opensuse and drivers? There are known issues with some of Nvidia’s drivers on 64-bit systems. (Speaking from experience. ) Confirm that you have an NVidia card; if not, what brand do you have?

The First step was all right. The second was:

:/home/user # nvidia-settings
bash: nvidia-settings: command not found

I’m using a Turbo 3000 K with 40 GB disk, 1GB RAM
32 bit
B.Video card: VIA Technologies INc KM400 (This was detected automatically, I don’t know If I really have this card phisicaly). Anyway, I don’t know why in suse 9.3, or in suse 11.1 the car was detected correctly.

I’m usimg 10.3, KDE. I don’t know which version of kde i’m using (I think is the 4th, but I don’T know where I can see which verion of kde I’m using.

Thanks a lot for this feedback

Best regards

Nvidia-settings is only provided for NVidia graphics adapters. Not surprising that it’s not available on your system, then. You can generally trust the Opensuse installer to correctly identify your hardware, so you can assume that you have the VIA hardware identified.

As for what you should try next, someone who’s familiar with VIA needs to pitch in. If you don’t get a response, start another thread, this time specifying the VIA adapter in the subject line, ex., “VIA KM400 - Can’t Set 1280 x 1024.”

Good luck, and hopefully, it can be straightened out. For future reference, though, this is why you should always start any post for hardware assistance with details about your hardware. I apologize for the runaround.

Thanks for your answer. I’ll try different configurations as you said I the I tell you.

Regards
