10.3 Suddenly Doesn't Start Normally

With no warning whatsoever my installation started doing this.

I turn on the power, go through the standard Opensuse green loading screen, then my Nvidia graphics screen loads as normal. Then I’m taken to a green login screen instead of directly to my desktop. When I try to login from here it just brings me right back. Then I go to system/console, run through sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia and it takes me to a desktop that’s not my usual one. I can still access files and such from Konqueror but luxuries such as sound are unavailable.

Any clues? Thank you.

Ah, the /root desktop is where it dumps me.

Sounds more like a configuration issue in your .kde config files.

If you’ll press CTRL-ALT-F1, and log in as your user (nothing will be
displayed when you type your password… type it blind, it’s not broken!)

then type:

mv .kde .kde-saved
exit

{remember the dots in those names… {dot} kde }

then CTRL-ALT-F7 and log in as you normally do, the KDE settings should be
rebuilt from scratch. You could then copy configuration files and data over
from the .kde-saved subdirectory as needed.

copy the configuration files over to where?

trilaan wrote:

before you do anything (that is, follow Loni’s advice) you will
ALREADY have a hidden file named .kde living in your home directory
(that is in /home/[YOUR user name]/.kde

her directions will have THAT directory MOVED into a NEW (backup)
directory at and named /home/[YOUR user name]/.kde-saved

which will cause KDE to then build a whole new .kde directory…

THEN you will have two files in your home directory, one named .kde
and the other named .kde-saved

KDE will be using ONLY the one named .kde and it should be cleaned
out of all the crud causing the problem noted in your thread
subject…BUT, KDE will NOT have access to all your built up data
that MAY now only exist in .kde-saved and you may copy it (from
…kde-saved TO .kde) as needed

but, be careful…because if you copy the unneeded CRUD over from
saved to new, then you will have the SAME problem you are now having…

got it?

Ooops, I already followed the advice. Could what you’re saying still work?

no oooops! you misunderstood what i was TRYING to say:

before you did anything there already existed a .kde

NOW, that you have followed her advice there should exist BOTH .kde
and .kde-saved, AND your machine should now be over its start up
problem…

IF your machine is working the way you wish…and, you are not
missing anything, then just keep going…you don’t HAVE to copy
anything back to the now in use .kde

just leave .kde-save there for a while…if you see that you ARE
missing something, you can go looking for it in .kde-saved, and copy
it over to .kde…

got it?

Okay, then. No, the problem isn’t fixed. I can only log in as root, I have no sound and my menus are all different from how they were. Sound is most important to me, I could probably rebuild my menu the way I had it if I must. If there’s a quicker way to get everything back to the way it was I appreciate the help in performing that function.

well, i am not surprised that you have problems…

NEVER EVER log into any Linux/*nix GUI as root…

more at http://tinyurl.com/6ry6yd

why SUSE built a GUI log-in screen making it all too easy for folks
to do so is beyond my capacity for understanding…

For the record…I know all that. I haven’t been a noob to Linux for 4 years.

but you logged into the gui as root anyway?

It will NOT let me log in under anything else. I thought I made that clear by saying I could ONLY log in as root. If it was not clear enough I apologize so could you get on with the helping and bypass the "how dumb are you?"routine, please?

If you can log in as root, did you check to see if your user account still exists? If not, did you try to re-create it?

I agree 100% with DenverD that running as user root is very risky and puts your entire system at risk. You could make a serious crippling mistake, and not know for sometime, when finally the implications of a mistake become obvious. … running too long as root could make your recovery efforts very difficult, … and then there are the security implications on top of that. Indeed if not careful you could prematurely push yourself into a re-install.

Anyway, once you get your regular user account sorted (please try to create one as noted ASAP ! ) , if your sound is still not working, please post and I’ll try to help you with your sound.

Good luck.

I managed to log back in as a root session and got the root desktop again. Don’t know what to do next. There’s sound but it skips like wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh wuh. So it’s pretty much as it was previously. I can log into my user account under Konsole only. If I restart into my user account I get past the opensuse loading screen to a black screen where the mouse pointer appears and is movable but that’s it. Furthermore startx works under root. I reinstalled Nvidia and it told me there was no kernel interface and it created one. I don’t know if that’s relevant. Anyway I have visual and audio but if I try to log out I just serve myself a big piece of pain in the keister pie.

If the next step is re-creating a user account I don’t know how to do it.

Just because I’m feeling lousy and bitchy and all sorts of bad thoughts…

4 years… and can’t create a user account?

I’m going to just withdraw from this… got issues and headaches I’m dealing
with… amazing.

It’s funny isn’t it? When familiarity is bred from stagnation through repetition of known actions in lieu of constant expansive experimentation?

Go to YaST > Security and Users > User Management > Add

I found it. So delete the old one and add it in again or just add a new one?

If you can live with a modified user name, add a new one first and ensure it works, … then when happy, and when you have all the appropriate data you need copied from your original /home/oldusername , you can delete the old “oldusername”.

Your professionalism and friendliness is a credit to all, oldcpu.

Looks like it works good, I logged in and everything and the sound works.
