[10.2] two hours for finding out there are no updates?

On an otherwise completely idle 2,8 GHz P4 with 1 Gig of RAM:

ts@geneva:~> time sudo rug up
root’s password:
Waking up ZMD…Done
No updates are available.

real 117m52.433s
user 0m0.536s
sys 0m0.020s
ts@geneva:~>

During that time, CPU load is constantly at 100%, first from
“parse-metadata” (for 78 minutes) and then from “update-status”
(for 40 minutes).

Surely something isn’t right here? Nearly two CPU hours just for
finding out that the machine is up to date?

Any knobs I could twiddle to alleviate that problem?

Thx
T.

Yeah, that marriage between zmd and yast was a bit of a disaster.

On 10.1 I found it useful now and then to delete /var/lib/zmd/zmd.db and let it rebuild. Don’t know if this works with 10.2.

Wasn’t it possible to turn off zmd sync and just use rug? I forgot that nightmare now.

I would twiddle the one needed to point from 10.2 to 10.3 (which runs nicely
here) and has another year of support. (10.2 runs out at the end of this month.)

Others will say to wait a month and load 11.1. But, 10.3 is pretty stable, 11.1
I have no idea.

PS: Moving from 10.2 to 10.3 is NOT painless (well, it wasn’t for me).

Yes. I have similar situation … I am using yast … the screen always showing “downloading from repository …” … but when it is done (um … 15 to 30 minutes), the yast returned “no update available”.

In the past 6 hours … I re-did the installation over 4 times. In the Online Update, get the same message “no update available” regardless which site/mirrors using.

I did a installation 2 days ago and using exactly same procedure … donno what is happening in this great Distro … too tired, may be it is a time to really consider to change something else.

listen carefully: change to 10.3 or 11.0 or 11.1

Dear Sire,

I am using 10.3 … almost 18 months. I like it (and also the previous version till to 7.3). I did try to install the 11.0, but to me, it is very disappointed. So that I fallback to 10.3.

Re the problem of Update (of 10.3), I also found another email talking the same problem.

I found the filelist.xml (of 10.3, of coz) was changing on 7th Nov and then 9th Nov. Donno whether it is related.

> I am using 10.3

Then, why reply to a thread titled “[10.2] two hours for finding out there are
no updates?” saying “I have similar situation” but failing to mention it is
COMPLETELY DIFFERENT since you are running 10.3? (Different repos, different
YaST code, etc!)
