10-15 secconds black screen during boot

Hello,

I’ve currently been experiencing a 10-15 secconds black screen during boot time. At first i thought it was blocked, so i just kept on resetting :). Untill now the boot time has been under 5 secconds (booting from a SSD). Checking xorg logs i find nothing wrong here. Can someone please take a loook ?

seeing that log, i suppose it’s something related to the network. checking the localmessages log i found this

is it a wired or wireless network?

if wireless is it at a place where you normally boot? or are you
booting at a new or unusual place?

are you using Network Manager or YaST (ifup) to set up your networking?

also, please show us the terminal output and input, as well as the
beginning prompt and exit prompt, from

cat /etc/resolv.conf | grep -v \#
lsb_release -sircd

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

and, in the future please give the basic information (like
operating system and version, desktop environment and version)

dd

Did you by any means edit /etc/resolv.conf ?

A thing you can do, is in Yast - Network - Network settings:

  • edit the device’s entry, set the activation time from “at cable connection” to “at boottime”

The network is wired. Traditional IF method is used. The activation is and always has been to “at boottime”. The network is at home, where i always booted, the same router…same everything. The only thing that i did before the black screen appeared is installing the new nvidia 319.23 driver. After that i did go back to 319.17 but the problem remained. That’s why i initially assumed it is xorg.conf related.

I will issue the commands dd specified when i get back to my pc.

p.s specs - os - OpenSuse 12.3 KDE 4.10, hardware i7 2600k, 8 GB ramm, 60 gb OCZ agility 3 SSD, Nvidia 570, Asus Maximus motherboard.

Ok this is trange, what is the name of my router doing there ? I’ve never touched resolv.conf. Here is the output

radu@linux-6xel:~> cat /etc/resolv.conf | grep -v \#
search ASUS
nameserver 192.168.1.1
radu@linux-6xel:~> lsb_release -sircd
openSUSE project "openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64)" 12.3 Dartmouth

to answer your question: your system is using the router as its DNS,
and when that was (automatically) set up the router reported itself
as ASUS

and, unfortunately it appears that networking is probably not the
problem…(i say “unfortunately” because i don’t have one clue what
might be the trouble…

so i strongly suggest you ignore that short pause and hope it goes
away with some future update or move to a newer version…

dd

let’s try and solve the issues, and not ignore them :). Any1 else has any ideeas ?

log a bug and let the hacker squash it…

(not that i’m saying if i can’t help you, no one here can–nope, LOTS
here smarter than me! but not many want to use more of their
volunteer time than i already have trying to save you 10 to 15
seconds…so log your bug and also hang here waiting for better help!!!)

dd

Ok, i solved the issue. Seeing how it was clearly related to the network ( 21071ms network.service is defenetly not ok) i switched to Network Manager instead of if up method in yast. Blank screen is still there (most likely due to the nvidia driver) but only for less than 1 seccond. Everything booted up nicely, however, firefox could not connect to internet. I have ping, yast would go for updates, even Konqueror would open up pages but not Firefox. Lazy as i am instead of figuring out the issue i just installed chromium and everything works now. Thx for the help, i was 100% sure it was video related and not network, untill i saw systemd-analyze blame output.

Nevermind the last part, i wrote manually the dns in Network Manager, closed and restarted Firefox and it works now.

You are using automatic IP, get name from dhcp server.

Please don’t.

Just paste your text in the susepaste site, set a reasonable period for
automatic removal (2 months is more than enough), and here just paste
the link to it.
