    https://docs.kernel.org/filesystems/hfs.html:
MacOS 8.1 and newer support a filesystem called HFS+ that’s similar to HFS but is extended in various areas. Use the hfsplus filesystem driver to access such filesystems from Linux.
I read this as HFS+ driver supporting HFS in similar manner to EXT4 driver supporting EXT2 & EXT3. The HFS driver has no maintainer.

Even proprietary software goes out of production.

As directed in comments #9 & #13, did you try mounting with type hfsplus, or first modprobing hfsplus then type hfs?

    Code:
    TOWER:~ # modprobe hfsplus
    TOWER:~ # mount -t hfs -o force,rw /dev/sdc4 /media/disk
mount: /media/disk: unknown filesystem type 'hfs' (hint: possibly blacklisted, see mount(8)).
    TOWER:~ # mount -t hfsplus -o force,rw /dev/sdc4 /media/disk
mount: /media/disk: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc4, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.

Default AW: Remove HFS filesystem from blacklist.

Have you installed hfsprogs and hfsutils?
    maybe fsck will help:
    Code:
    man fsck.hfsplus
