Thread: Could not install Nvidia driver via Yast->Software

Unhappy Could not install Nvidia driver via Yast->Software

As usual, I encountered Nvidia problems. (Since 22 years, if I remember correctly?)

A recent update of 15.4, which also updated the kernel, broke the Nvidia driver. I used to use the G05 version, for years, without problems.

Now the driver (Four Nvidia-related packages from Yast->Software) can be installed, but the driver cannot be loaded. When manually loading by

    Code:
    modprobe nvidia
a message comes saying something about mismatched or missing symbols.

    Kernel version is
    Code:
    5.14.21-150400.24.11-default #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC
I also tried G06. This driver does not see the graphics card, which was expected.

After that, I remove the nvidia driver and install nouveau. nouveau works normally, but has limitations and lesser quality.

Creation and manipulation of xorg.conf, with entering of PCI address of the Nvidia card, does not help.

Finally I installed the driver from the Nvidia's web site, version 470.141.03. Now the nvidia driver is installed and works. (Evidently, the 22 years of experience of playing the Nvidia-Kernel game are not lost.)

This issue for me is not urgent. Likely there was a mismatch in creation of G05. I will make an attempt later; maybe the issue will be resolved with a new version of kernel.

Have you been following the NVIDIA SDB? – <https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers>.
Is the NVIDIA MOK certificate (public key) needed for Secure Boot properly installed?

Unhappy No combination of instructions works.

I have tried the instructions in

    https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers

Nvidia driver is not loaded whether secure boot is enabled or not.

    A folder
    Code:
    /var/lib/nvidia-pubkeys
    is not created after installation.

During reboot after installation, the EFI tool (mokutil) is not automatically started.

The message in log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log says that the kernel module could not be initialized.

The dmesg tells only about Nvidia audio driver installation.

Looking at the Bug Report mentioned below, the answer has to be: “Please wait.”

    Smile Restored

With recent update of kernel and NVidia driver, all is working.

From runlevel 3, I uninstalled the manually installed driver first:
    Code:
    sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.141.03.run --uninstall
Then I called yast (not yast2), and did an update. The NVidia driver was automatically selected for update, as was the kernel.
