Thread: HP Zbook 17.3 fury G8 - video and audio issues

  1. #31

Default Re: HP Zbook 17.3 fury G8 - video and audio issues

ILL OP is using Intel Xe (Gen 12) GPU. So newer drivers are needed for Leap 15.3.
To get them you need to install newer Linux kernel.
Another options: use TW or Leap 15.4.
Leap 15.4 will be in beta in 23 Feb 2022.

With Leap 15.3 you may also need newer Mesa 3D and other X.org stuff.

After upgrading to Leap 15.4 some issues seem to be resolved. The i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=1 setting isn't needed anymore and the memory card reader works now.

But the screen glitches and de occasional system crashes remain. Also some KDE applications continue to crash, like Systemsettings and Networkmanager. Even Yast/Yast2 bootloader module crashes when browsing through panels.

    dmesg reports following errors:

Before the update to Leap 15.4 glxgears was running despite of glitches. Now it crashes:

2.8.1.3 Support for Intel’s Alderlake graphics platform Report Documentation Bug #

SLES 15 SP4 adds support for Intel’s Alderlake graphics platform as technology preview. You can enable it by adding the i915.force_probe=<Device-ID> parameter to your kernel options in GRUB configuration. In order to figure out the <Device ID> of the Intel graphics adapter, use the inxi -aG command.

The output should look like this:

    Code:
    ~> inxi -aG
    Graphics:
Device-1: Intel (R) Graphics vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:46a6
So in this case, use i915.force_probe=46a6 as the kernel option. The command to add the option to the bootloader configuration would then be:
    pbl --add-option 'i915.force_probe=46a6' --config
To get out-of-box support you need newer kernel.

The kernel 5.14 does not support Tiger Lake? I tried to find on internet which kernel version would support chip-ID: 8086:9a60 but it seems not so easy to find.

Which version do I need, or where can I find this info?

Or shoud I add the kernel option:
    pbl --add-option 'i915.force_probe=9a60' --config

Thanx for the links!. Gives insight into the different intel hardware versions. But I find it difficult to relate this to specific kernel-versions that would support the hardware. Maybe I'm too optimistic about the existence of a simple table that would describe that..

I switched to Tumbleweed. The kernel in Tumbleweed appears young enough because the issues are gone!
Need a stable system, so I hope Tumbleweed will be stable enough compared to Leap.

    Thanks for your help!

For Leap 15.4 use i915.force_probe=9a60 as the kernel option or upgrade kernel.
