Thread: RaspberryPi 3B+ Desktop problems.

    Default RaspberryPi 3B+ Desktop problems.

    Hi all.

I'm experimenting with RPi 3B+ with 1G RAM. Would like to use a Leap 15.3 KDE Live distro. So I have a flash drive with it.
The problem: after boot in KDE I can see the mouse cursor on the black background only, not the desktop itself. Yellow LED on Raspi flashes. The LED on the flash drive also flashes sometimes. May be 1G RAM is not enough for KDE?
I can't issue any GRUB commands, because my Belkin wired USB keyboard not works at boot screen.

Any ideas, please? Where could I find step-by-step instructions for openSUSE on Raspi besides SDB: Raspi 3?

    Thanks in advance,
    Vadim.

I'm pretty sure that's the case:
    https://get.opensuse.org/leap

    System Requirements

    • 2 Ghz dual core processor or better
    • 2GB physical RAM + additional memory for your workload
    • Over 40GB of free hard drive space
    • Either a DVD drive or USB port for the installation media
    • Internet access is helpful, and required for the Network Installer

And that's for the local installation. With a life system you need more RAM for the virtual file system etc. As KDE is quite demanding I can't imagine this working at all. I have no idea of the other DEs as e.g. iceWM or LXDE. It may be worth a try.

Just an idea but I don't know if it could work: Is it possible to partition the drive and set up a life system so it brings and mounts it's own swap? If so and the flash drive is fast, could it be made running by heavy swapping? That wouldn't be nice treatment to the flash drive I guess. I'm just fantasizing after all.

    Hi.
Will check with other Desktops and report if succeeded.
    Thanks, Vadim.

    Hi all.

LXQt works, the others, that I have checked (so far KDE, XFCE) - not.
