In spite of my best endeavours and using your advice to set the correct block size on the nvme drive, once I had then proceeded to install I couldn't get it to work. In fact I couldn't get any system up. I cleared out all the opensuse-secure boot lines but my BIOS is quite strange and continues to surprise me.
Having failed several times I tried reverting to what I remembered I did when it worked which meant removing all the partitions on the nvme and starting over. No errors then on installation but I couldn't boot without using the F12 when post had completed, which allows me to select my start option. If I select opensuse-secureboot (I forgot to de-select the secure boot during installation,) I get back to Leap 15.3.

The post system gave me Warnings, Error 13 booting errors, which I have no idea how to fix. This is an intermediate post in the saga as I have no more time to look at this until tomorrow evening when I shall try again, remembering to disable secure boot.
Meanwhile if you have time, this is what I have on my system now:-

I have not mounted /dev/sda as it no longer has the booting directories installed.

Also mrmazda suggested how to mount my /dev/sda/Mastermedia but I think I need more instruction on changing ownership and group. I believe I need to make the /dev/sda/Mastermedia to be owned by me (alastair) and in group (users). Is that correct and should I try and do it using Yast or from cli?

    Hi
To boot UEFI it must be set to type gpt, yours is dos.....

    Code:
Model: Kingston DT microDuo 3C (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdb: 124GB
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
    Partition Table: msdos

    Hi Malcolm,
That would explain the reason why the machine wouldn't boot without help but it was all done through expert partition manager so I must have erred. Just cannot work out what I did different from the first time.

Can I correct this without having to do a new install?

    Hi
Never tried might be easier to pre-configure disk and re-install?

    Hi Malcolm,
Seems like a plan but try as I might, I cannot get the expert partitioner to format the USB stick with GPT. What is odd is that I did it without trying the first time following the instructions. Will check again.
The instructions tell me to boot the installation in UEFI mode. All I can do is install from CDROM so is there something I missed.

Just as I was working on expert partitioner we had a major lightning strike nearby. It has taken out all the power here and in town. Laptop OK for now but no partitioning tonight! USPs are good for about 15 mins and then the wifi goes down too so I will sign off for tonight.
    Regards.

    Hi Malcolm,
As I had no power last night I went through this thread again. I think post no. 53 is where I came unstuck when working with nvme. I didn't get any line about starting at 2048. Could it be there is a prompt missing in the instructions?
I am trying to get rid of USB and have the booting /boot and /boot/efi on the hard drive and the rest on nvme as once suggested but think this is where I messed up.
Please could we re-visit creating the right block size on nvme and then proceed with installation.

With the default block size I still get an objection from expert partitioner when I try and do what is proposed. It doesn't like me putting /boot and /boot/efi on the hard drive with /, /root, etc on nvme.

While hope for an answer and since power had been restored I gave it another shot avoiding USB by putting /boot and /boot/efi on hard drive.
As before I can still boot to the secure boot but only by electing it from post bios selection.
I cannot get rid of the vfat even though when the partition was built it indicated otherwise. Something about the expert partitioner I don't get.

    Code:
    alastair@localhost:~> sudo lsblk -f

    Hi
I would boot from either rescue mode from the install media or USB Live and pre-configure the disks with gdisk?

Make the esp (/boot/efi) sda1 rather than 2. With gdisk you can start the partition at 2048.

Hi Malcolm, Done this using gdisk as you suggested. Did a bit of reading before embarking on this and I hope I have it right. Am typing while installation runs and hope this time all will be right in the morning.

Meanwhile I do believe there is a bug in the expert partitioner in that, even though I have created the partition for efi as GTP it reverts to vfat when the instructions are implemented. If it is not a bug it is a fault of implementation.

As an aside, the installation I am using is the network install which is my preference but after so many protracted nugatory installation runs I wondered if installation would be quicker from DVD so thought I would try it. Sadly there is a fault with the DVD installation, a security problem within the installer. Not had the time or energy to burn another but I do not think it is a burn error as the writing was verified. Now I will never know which method is quicker but thank heaven for broadband.
