Gnome desktop

Hello everyone
Im new to linux and i have a question about desktop enviroments
When i want to install opensuse leap i can choose generic desktop and after that i have 3 option in gnome section , base , wayland and x11.
What are they ? And which on is the best ? They function the same ?!
