Then remove the edit from 50-sound.conf and reboot.

Did you try the one command pulse audio disable with c2?

    Code:
     pasuspender -- arecord -vv -f S16_LE -c2 -D hw:0,0 soundtest.wav
    Code:
    pasuspender -- arecord -vv -f S16_LE -c2 -D hw:0,2 soundtest.wav

What is your current 'front mic' boost level ? Try different levels ... ie 33% ... 66% ... 75% ... 100% and see if they make a difference.

    [SOLVED]

Dear All, I finally got this working via a cheap USB Microphone (USD 10). Brand / model -> Yanmai G22.

I plugged the usb microphone into a USB port in front, PulseAudio automatically picked it up
    as;

'Configuration' as 'USB Microphone' : 'Profile : Analog Mono Input'
'Input Devices' as 'USB Microphone Analog Mono'
'Recording' as whatever app / browser tab : 'RecordStream from' 'USB Microphone Analog Mono'

In the Browser - we must allow 'USB Microphone Analog Mono'

The input recording volume can be set/disabled via PulseAudio as
Volume Icon -> 'USB Microphone Analog Mono'.

Thanks to everybody who chipped in with their ideas ...

Glad to read the USB microphone is working.

Still, the mic plugged in to your PC mic jack should work, especially if, as you state, it works in another Operating System.

I am a bit surprised that more people have not been complaining about the mic not working (on an ALC262 hardware such as your PC has) but still, the fact that we could not get it to work with the alsa level commands I provided suggests to me there may be a problem with the openSUSE LEAP-15.1 kernel for the ALC262 that you have on your PC - in which case it is likely worth writing a bug report on openSUSE kernel on this failure .....

...or consider testing/upgrading to openSUSE Leap 15.2 (as 15.1 is almost EOL).
openSUSE Leap 15.2; KDE Plasma 5

End of the year ... I normally wait a while ... just want things to be stable ....
On 15.1, i still have the issue of the wireless keyboard lagging, wireless mouse works
flawlessly .. will open a separate thread on that ...
