Thread: Audio stuttering (after a recent Tumbleweed update)

Angry Audio stuttering (after a recent Tumbleweed update)

On my Tumbleweed machine, audio playback stutters or skips occasionally, maybe once every few minutes. I'm running pulseaudio-13.0-8.1.x86_64 and all applications that output their audio through pulse are affected (mpv, Clementine, etc.). Most of them don't output any error message, though mpv helpfully tells me "Audio device underrun detected" whenever the audio stutters.

The problem started only after a Tumbleweed update in June, so I am thinking that may have something to do with it. htop and iotop don't show that my system is running under a particularly high CPU or I/O load.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Some Googling for the problem indicates that it might be fixable by disabling realtime scheduling in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf (which is indeed enabled on my system). But before I try this, I'm curious if anyone else recently started experiencing this problem and/or knows of any open bug reports about it. (AFAIK, realtime scheduling has been enabled on my system for years, so I don't see why it should be suddenly causing a problem now.)

Having had no responses to this thread, I disabled realtime scheduling of PulseAudio and restarted PulseAudio. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem—my audio is still stuttering.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

I don't use Tumbleweed with audio.

Still you could try some of the suggestions from this Arch Linux site for choppy/distorted/lagging sound: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...istorted_sound
