    Should be able to fire up YaST Software Management and select a desktop install, else via zypper install the gnome_basic and gnome patterns, if want X11 then add the gnome_x11 pattern...

    zypper in -t pattern gnome_basic gnome gnome_x11

    Ok I did that in yast. Logged out, switched desktop to gnome and all my kde apps are also showing up?

    Your KDE apps are in the menu for Gnome -- yes. Similarly, the Gnome applications are in the KDE menu. Most applications can be used from either desktop.
