Kmail crashes on start

Hi everyone,

everytime I start Kmail, it starts, opens, and seconds later crashes. It does not make a difference if I start it on the console or by clicking on the Kmail icon.

After starting Kmail on the console, I get the following output:

[Inferior 1 (process 4411) detached]

I use IMAP and POP3 Accounts. I had Kmail running in Leap 15.1 for some weeks without errors. After I had started sending the systen into standby mode instead of shutting down propperly I had a system crach and problems appeared after that.

I have all my mails backed up. I dont use any of the other programs of Kontact.

I could not find any help on the web so far, searched quiet a bit.

Appreciate any help!
Seb.

@seb234:

The repository list looks OK.

When I start KMail from a CLI I get:

When I start Kontact and then, KMail from within Kontact, these errors do not appear.

 • What happens when, you start Kontact and then, klick on the KMail icon?

BTW, for the rest of the world, when starting Kontact from a CLI, you may notice this:

> kontact
No such XML file "/home/xxx/.local/share/kontact/default-.rc"
>

Simply touch ‘~/.local/share/kontact/default-.rc’ and then, this message should disappear …

Well, then Kontact crashes and I get the following output:

and then after a few seconds:

org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: CacheCleaner found 2 item parts to expire in collection "inbox"

Does this make sense to anybody? Not to me.

Have you tried the usual?:

akonadictl fsck
akonadictl vacuum
akonadictl restart

Yes. I tried them all with no result. Kmail still crashes. Should I show/paste the output?

I set up a new testuser on my system and imported my kmail settings. Everithings seems to work quiet okay. Can I conclude, it has to be a problem with user specific settings or mail?

I remeber, weeks ago, kmail crashed whenever I opened up a speciffic mail. Might this again be the case with the latest mail causing the crash.

So my question is: How can I delete the latest mail without starting kmail?

Maybe you should take a look at the user’s ~/.cache/ directory.
Especially the Kontact directories …

 • If you do this from a Virtual Terminal (VT) before logging into a KDE Plasma session, you can safely delete everything in the user’s ~/.cache/ directory.

Take a look in ~/.local/share/.local-mail.directory/inbox/cur/ and sort the files there with “ls -alrt” – the newest one is the one to remove but, take a look at it with a text editor before you delete it.

 • If there’s nothing there, take a look in ~/.local/share/local-mail/ …

I have a ~/.cache/kontact/messagelist/threading directory which shows entries only for one month - october. Thats strange, besause mails came in during a longer time range. Do I missunderstand something?
I have a ~/.cache/kmail2/messagelist/threading directory which shows entries for a longer time range. Is this the one I should empty as you described above

I deleted the first mail but kmail still crashes on start.

Some terse, but relevant information is shown by running:

okay, here we go:

@linux-5ywc:~> akonadictl fsck 2>&1|grep Found

what are RDI?

RID = Remote ID

Try this after exiting Kmail / Kontact

akonadictl stop
mv ~/.local/share/akonadi/file_lost+found ~/.local/share/akonadi/file_lost+found.old
akonadictl start

That looks really bad. You may want to repair your data base tables:

karl@erlangen:~> mysql --socket=/run/user/1000/akonadi/mysql.socket

How can I start mysql to see database ‘akonadi’? If I open it as -uroot -pblahblah I can not see it.

user@linux-5ywc:/run/user/1000> mysql -uroot -pblahblah
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Well, thats silly. Of course I can start mysql with root credentials. But there is no akonadi Database.

Karl, here on Leap 15.1 the MySQL socket is “/tmp/akonadi-xxx.6Uj19x/mysql.socket” and, the PID file is “/tmp/akonadi-xxx.6Uj19x/mysql.pid”.

hmmm, all I have is:
