Sometimes things are easier than one might think.
    Code:
    git clone https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules.git
    cd vmware-host-modules
    git checkout workstation-15.5.1
    make
    make install
The above commands make vmware player 15.5.1 running with Tumbleweed (kernel 5.4.7) and Leap 15.1 (with kernel 5.4.4 & 5.4.10)

Now is still in progress a problem with sound card but for that I'll open a separate thread.

    yes
    (with Yast
YaST or zypper or rpm, doesn't matter
    so also initrd comes rebuilt)
None of above will cause rebuild initrd, nor need to.
    reboot
    Unnecessary
lock initrd with chattr +i for preventing further (unwanted) upgrade of it
When doesn't matter, as long as before doing any updates that would rebuild. I would start with this. Alternatively, /etc/zypp/zypp.conf multiversion.kernels can explicitly specify any particular version to keep.

Yes, it's filesystem independent, just takes the packages from an earlier snapshot.

If the problem is audio within a virtualized guest, your problem is most likely the lack of installing working VMware Guest Tools.
Verify are installed. Should be installed automatically by openSUSE if your VMware environment was detected properly.

Virtualization issues should be posted in the Virtualization Forum.
