Thread: Disk nearly full

    Default Disk nearly full

    Hi,

I checked in on the disk space and see it's nearly full. I have run df -Th and the results are:

    Code:

I thought the 40gig was enough for my installation, but this is probably not right. I see the / directory is 93 % full, but I can't see which folder uses all the space. Can anybody give me a clue how to find out what I should do to slim down the space used, if possible. I have a possibility to move some files in the home directory to another disk, but my prefered action is to get rid of excessive files in the root directory.

    Regards

    Dag

    Look into tools like "ncdu"

I use 40G for my root partition. But I am using the "ext4" file system. For "btrfs", 40G seems a bit small. When I have experimented with "btrfs", I have used 50G which is perhaps still too small.

In any case you can use
    Code:
    snapper list
    to list snapshots. And then
    Code:
    snapper delete snapshot-number
to delete a snapshot by number.

There are some restrictions. You cannot delete snapshot 0, for example.

Deleting some older snapshots should free up some space.

Perhaps somebody with more "btrfs" experience can give details.

That is an itterative process with intelligent guesses.

You make the startpoint your working directory and then see which of the directories in there look as outrageous. You then make that one your working directory, and so on.
    Code:
    cd /
    du -sh *
for the first step. If then e.g. var looks as far to big:
    Code:
    cd var
    du -sh *
But maybe first check if there is not to much left in /tmp.
And /var/log is also a place to check.

That will not provide proper results.
    Code:
sudo btrfs fi du -h /
    will.

    Code:

Showed that the /tmp folder had 20 gig. Is it possible to delete some of that?

Basicaly that depends on what it is and only you can know.

But again basicaly, ypou can start with an empty /tmp at boot, thus everything can be deleted at (or just before) shutdown.

Maybe look at the dates of thos files and delete very old ones. And try to detect what those files are. Who is the owner? What program made them? So you may understand how to avoid this situation.

Or go for a fine result by logout of all the GUI users, then Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the console, log in as root and do
    Code:
    cd /tmp
    rm -ef *
    shutdown -r now
I will also post below general information on how a growing /tmp can be avoided. But please understand that that works on shutdown and/or boot and not when you have your system running all the time.
    =========================
For cleaning /tmp and /var/tmp at boot:

When there is not already a file /etc/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf create it as a copy

    Code:
    cp /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf /etc/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf
    Then change the lines
    Code:
    # Clear tmp directories separately, to make them easier to override
    # SUSE policy: we don't clean those directories
    d /tmp 1777 root root -
    d /var/tmp 1777 root root -
    into
    Code:
    # Clear tmp directories separately, to make them easier to override
    # My policy: empty /tmp en /var/tmp on boot.
    D! /tmp 1777 root root 1d
    D! /var/tmp 1777 root root 1d
    See
    Code:
    man 5 tmpfiles.d
    ================================
    For making /tmp a tmpfs:
    Add an entry into /etc/fstab
    Code:
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs size=25%,uid=root,gid=root,mode=1777 0 0
    See
    Code:
    man 8 mount
specialy the section: Mount options for tmpfs.

Before mounting this file system for the first time (either by command, or by reboot) you should clean the present /tmp directory as good as possible. Existing contents will still occupy disk space when you mount a file system over it.

I ran ls -la on the /tmp folder, but the content didn't give me any idea of what I might could do otherwise. Could you peek into it?

Throw away all those dolhin one to begin with. Should already give you some breathing air
Do not know what they are, but some of them are years old and never used again.

I do not know why Dolphin has them still there. I also use Dolphin, but even when using it, there is not such a file in /tmp.

Looking at the posted content of "/tmp"

1: I agree with Henk, that you should just delete all of the "dolphin*" files. It is probably best to not be running dolphin while you are doing that.

2: It looks to me as if there is nothing of importance in "/tmp". So follow Henk's advice and setup "/tmp" to be cleared on boot. That should avoid a repeat of this problem.
