    Everything should be default. I do not believe I have customized any GFX settings. Is there a method to check that?

    OK, here is the debug from the 2.81a tarball, in two posts, and the blender.crash.txt.
    Unzipped, placed in the same home .blender folder as 2.79b that still works, in it's own folder.
    Won't start. But 2.79b still does.

    Can you create a test user and log in to say IceWM, also you are running X and not Wayland?

    It is running on X and not Wayland.

    Same issue on IceWM. Tries to start, a window opens, you can read Blender on the top bar of the window. The body of the window is grey, then it crashes.
