Perhaps, although I would think others would be similarly impacted and I'm not seeing such reports in these forums. Hopefully, others can advise further. Not sure where else to go with this.

Hi Deano, Just been going through options on the HP Developer's site and find that they have a slightly newer version hplip-3.19.8. I also want to re-flash my firmware just in case this was not ok.

I am going through the instructions for the firmware which is written for Mac but ok for linux too but I have a problem with character sets because the linux command is:-

Type the command: "lpr –l 2800fw_20120307.rfu" (followed by the return/enter key)
I am sure they do not want me to input an a with top hat and euro sign and possibly an extra ". (At least that is how it is interpreted on my system.) Please could you advise what the lpr command should be?

While waiting for clarification on the above lpr command I had a look at the newer version of hplip and tried it with the hp installer.

The whole process took a while and clearly the process is very complex. The autoinstaller is designed for Leap 15.1 so I tried it at my peril. In spite of previous runs of hp-doctor confirming that my system had been ok, there were quite a few missing dependencies and some interesting comments, too numerous to note down, the gist of which was that some scanning functions might not be available but the installation ran to its conclusion and didn't crash. It also advised there could be a clash with earlier version of hplip and should I uninstall it, which I did.

I then was able to run hp-setup and this time it did not crash until after it tried to build the print queue. In other words I had gone well past the point at which hp-setup had previously failed.

I then went back to yast to run hp-setup from there and yast was not aware that hplip had been installed. I also noted that hplip-hpijs, hplip-sane were still showing as installed with earlier version 3.19.6-2.1 and hplip and hplip-scan-utils were also not installed. However I do wonder where the new hplip is installed if yast is not aware of it. Should I be running a sudo zypper dup I wonder or would that downgrade what I have installed.

At this point I hope you will be able to ponder further on my findings but it seems there might be a good chance of getting hplip upgraded and that it would then work. Any suggestions?

BTW for the first time since I reported my persistent US flag for keyboard country even though I do not have any US selected anywhere, the reboot after the hplip installation has corrected the problem. Fingers crossed.

hp-installer does not register anything to the rpm-database......

So it is recommended to use only rpms, such as:
    https://download.opensuse.org/reposi...2.2.x86_64.rpm
    https://download.opensuse.org/reposi...2.2.x86_64.rpm

Stay with using the openSUSE packages (as Sauerland already mentioned).

Many thanks and I understand. I was just trying something else in desperation. What I do not understand is where your links came from as my installed "default" repos do not have the 3.19.8 versions.

More importantly how should I get rid of my hp installer files or rather clean them up?

I understand but having tried to sue Sauerland's links the dependencies fail. I apologise for making a mess of things and would appreciate your and Saulerland's help in sorting this out.

    What dependencies?
You can add my repo temporarily: (Tumbleweed)
    Code:
    zypper ar -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Sauerland:/branches:/home:/Sauerland/openSUSE_Tumbleweed_standard/ Sauerlan
    and install:
    Code:
    zypper in -f hplip hplip-sane hplip-hpijs

    Hi Sauerland,
Very many thanks. I have done as you advised (at some point I would like to understand the / Sauerlan at the end of the command,) and your repos are installed and I have run the zypper in command as you advised. No problems in doing this and I now have the newer files installed.

Running hp-setup no longer produces the early crash. The program runs up to the point where I have selected the printer but then it does not write the last part and I get back to where I started.

My initial excitement was premature but very many thanks for all your help. If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Regards and thanks also to Deano.

    Code:
zypper add repo -refresh URL "Name of the Repo"
    Code:
    zypper ar -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Sauerland:/branches:/home:/Sauerland/openSUSE_Tumbleweed_standard/ Sauerlan
There is a missing d for Sauerland, you can change it in Yast-----Software Repositories.........

    Please post as root:
    Code:
    zypper lr -d
    Code:
    zypper dup
