Default /var/log curiosity question about messages files

I didn't know where to put this post, but....
When and how do the 'messages-<some-date>.xz files get cleaned up?
I know I can't remove them as a non-root user, and some go back to the end of 2018, and some are quite large(2 to 5MB).
    HP Compaq desktop Leap15.2, Win10, Win7
    Toshiba laptops Leap15.2 & Win10, HP AiO Win10.
I can now print with openSuSe Leap! Can Scan now, could be better!!
I can backup my iPod and iPad with Windows, can't with Linux.(Will get there someday!)

AFAIK this is configured in /etc/logrotate.conf and /etc/logrotate.d/
