Ok, at least you have demonstrated that you can ping the scanner device successfully.

Not a good result with iscan though. A segmentation fault is the result of a memory access violation, but not sure why that is occurring. Try using xsane or simple-scan instead. You may need to install these first.

    Code:
    xsane
    Code:
    simple-scan
    Code:
    scanimage
openSUSE Leap 15.0; KDE Plasma 5

    xsane doesn't work:
    Code:
     linux-4qnb:~ # xsane
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    simple-scan doesn't work:
    Code:
     linux-4qnb:~ # simple-scan

    (simple-scan:13467): Gtk-WARNING **: 21:34:48.708: Creating a portal monitor failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such interface “org.freedesktop.portal.Inhibit” on object at path /org/freedesktop/portal/desktop
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    scanimage doesn't work:
    Code:
     linux-4qnb:~ # scanimage
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
This is not looking good so far. . . .

    Hi Doug

Are you using Gnome desktop in a Wayland environment?

    Code:
    echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
    Code:
    echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
openSUSE Leap 15.0; KDE Plasma 5

Also, make sure you're not trying to launch those scanning applications as root.

I'm using the KDE Plasma 5 desktop--which works on PCLOS on my laptop, and used to work on this machine, in PCLOS days. I have installed xsane via the usual (I think) OpenSUSE routines. I have installed my password onto the "Konsole" so it always opens as root, which is not exactly what I had in mind, but I don't believe in the "sudo" environment--a mindset I inherited from PCLOS. I am very careful of commands that might damage the system. I have the normal XSane installed with an icon on the
screen -pardon me, desktop--any other commands have to go thru the root Konsole--there is no other here. (Thank heavens!} In the event that you're not familiar with a root environment, when you type "exit", it goes away completely--not to something that is not root. AFAIK, anything that you want to execute in any form will run in a root environment.

Thank you for any assistance! --doug

Image Scan! is a graphical scanner utility for people that do not need
all the bells and whistles provided by several of the other utilities
        out there (xsane, QuiteInsane, Kooka).

At the moment it only supports SEIKO EPSON scanners and all-in-ones.
However, the scanner driver it provides can be used by any other SANE
        standard compliant scanner utility.

Note that several scanners require a non-free plugin before they can
        be used with this software.

I have installed GIMP as per Karl Mistelberger, and it opens, but I don't see any item regarding iscan or any scanner app on it. I have never used any kind of
art program and I have no idea what to do with GIMP. I have Image Scan in the app list, but it doesn't open, even if I have GIMP open already.

Regarding running as user, if the application appears in Dolphin, I can open it from there, but I don't see any way of running an app as user from the console--
probably I'm just not aware of a command to change the console to user mode.

Is there some way to trouble-shoot whatever is "rotten?" Everything else I have installed is working perfectly, only the scanner app(s) can't find the scanner, even tho the
all-in-one printer/scanner/copier prints fine from the computer.

Thanx to all who are trying to help! --doug

Before fixing the other things: try running
    Code:
    xterm
    as you user.

And yes, I think others are right. You should never ever run apps as root.

I have tried xsane, simple-scan, scanimage and iscan. All of them work properly on my machine. And I have no idea what could break them. But scanning relies on sane and you might check packages installed:

    Code:
    erlangen:~ # zypper se --installed-only sane
    Loading repository data...
    Reading installed packages...

    ---+--------------------------+---------------------------------------------------+--------
i+ | hplip-sane | Only plain scanning with HPLIP scan drivers | package
    i+ | libKF5Sane5 | KDE scan library | package
    i+ | libksane-lang | Translations for package libksane | package

    i+ | xsane | A GTK-Based Graphical Scanning Front-End for SANE | package
    erlangen:~ #
To verify you may run the following command for each package listed:

    Code:
    erlangen:~ # rpm -V sane-backends
    S.5....T. c /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
    erlangen:~ #
