Which kernel is on the new installation?

Which kernel is running when you rescue boot?

removed nvidia video card 210 from slot #2
installed nvidia video card into slot #1
Installed which card in slot #1?

PCIe slot #2 usually is a 4X slot, while PCIe slot #1 is usually a 16X slot. Is "slot #2" a PCEe slot?

Which slot a video card is installed in should have nothing to do with booting to a black screen unless some manual configuration of X has been performed, which a normal fresh installation will not attempt to do.

I don't really know, and I'm not the expert of video cards.

However, here is something to consider:

Check what kernels you have installed:
    Code:
    ls -l /boot/vmlinuz*
I have both 4.12.14-lp151.27-default and 4.12.14-lp151.28.4-default installed here.

If you only have the second of those, then you might want to try installing the first. I suggest because it seems to be better with some video cards. I think you can do that from the root command line, using
    Code:
    zypper install --oldpackage kernel-default=4.12.14-lp151.27.3
    openSUSE Leap 15.1; KDE Plasma 5;
    testing Leap 15.2Alpha

    1. Update your BIOS (rev. 1.0 or rev. 2.x)
Try to update VIA VL805 chip BIOS - old one can cause some minor problems.

    2. Some fine tuning is needed for an AMD IOMMU:

It's v2.0 hardware, latest version of the bios - FD.

I had professional hardware person do the install. Yes, the other video card is in the x16 slot. The nvidia 210 was in the #4 slot, but not at the same time.

This has nothing to do with any BIOS. The lp151.28-4 kernel is defective. 4 bug reports have already been filed because of it.

This problems can be avoided if installation goes without updates for a kernel.
Install with DVD or USB stick without internet access -> switch to Nvidia proprietary drivers -> now you can update kernel.

I did an update install. The grub -- > advanced options now lists two kernels (from one kernel).

    4.12.14-lp151.28.4 fails crashes

    4.12.14-lp151.27-default boots successfully

Works with the high level nvidia card.

It did another system update, many installed. I now have the nvidia drivers installed.Graphics and hmdi speakers are working.

I used grub --> advanced options to boot to 4.12.14-lp151.28.4 The default boot option. It booted successfully.

    Thanks for the assistance.
