Ryzen Problems

First a couple of things. I’ve been building PC’s for going on 30 years. I have done it professionally
for the past 27. I have been an on/off fan of AMD chips over the course of those years. Today I am
definitely in the Off camp. These new Ryzen chips have impressive specs but my gosh are they buggy
beasts. I built a system with Leap 15, a Ryzen 5 1600 8 core processor with 32GB of Crucial Memory and
an m2 SATA drive with a discrete nVidia card. I worked on this beast for over a month due to repeated hard locks
if the PC sat for 2 or more days untouched. It would also hang while in use but to rule out user interaction with apps I ran
it with nothing other than the base OS and let it sit running a shell with TOP running. There were no signs of memory
leaks or other nefarious things showing in top after a system freeze. One by one I have replaced parts to ensure
there was not bad memory, bad m2, bad video etc. I flashed all the firmwares to the latest revs to no avail. Finally on
Monday of this week I swapped out the Ryzen 5 for a Ryzen 3 3200. The box has now run for two solid days without
issue. Just putting this out there as there may still be unresolved issues with Ryzen chips. If you don’t have access to
an unlimited supply of CPU’s and every other component good luck finding the root cause. You won’t get any help from the
logs.

Possible a long running problem for some AMD processorshttps://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196683https://community.amd.com/thread/225795

AFAICS, one of the issues is, the AMD Chipset on the Motherboard: <https://www.amd.com/en/products/chipsets-am4>.

I’m beginning to suspect that, despite Motherboard manufacturers claims, the 2nd Generation Ryzen CPUs are better off with the newer (X470, B450) chipsets …
