Thread: Help me play pac man ( the origenal arcade version ) without messing up my desktop resolution

Default Help me play pac man ( the origenal arcade version ) without messing up my desktop resolution

What I have is an old MAME windows version that I can run through wine.

OpenSUSE leap 42.3 , but I doubt that's very interesting for this problem.

The problem is after quitting pac man and mame my desktop resolution is often messed up to 800 x 600

Rather perfect for pacman but not for anything beyond this.

I was thinking of an solution, and wondering, could I set up a virtual machine and then run mame from there.

Then it can only mess up the virtual pc ?

Or could I write a script that I can run after mame, to restore the right desktop resolution ?

Something I find amusing, this mame also causes desktop issues on windows 7. ( there a reboot fixes things )
On Linux a reboot does as usual nothing, I have to go into the nvidia setting to change the resolution back.

So set up virtual machine or use a script ? Or maybe any better ideas ?

Why not run the native linux MAME ?

I could try again, but I doubt it will recognize the roms.

But I will try again, and report back

I installed MAME ( for linux ) it seems to work, but it does not see any roms.
That was not unexpected, although mame is 100% legal, the roms are lets call it a grey area.

So I copied the roms over from the other MAME version, to use/share/mame/roms with Dolphin as super user.
( you cant copy to usr as a normal user)

I wonder if the Linux rights setting can be an issue. All files I see in user/share, have root as owner and group root.

The roms I copied however are group user and owner me.

I am gonna do some more googling first.

For now it feels copying the roms did nothing. The big question, am I doing it wrong or is there another problem.

Lets see if I can find some manual and or instructions.

It seems I did it right ( copying the roms), so I have a problem.

Maybe I should try this forum, because I think this is a mame specific issue.
I already read one comment of a person saying its a hit and miss if the roms will work with a certain version of mame.

In some posts I see you should
    Code:
    mkdir -p ~/mame/roms
and copy the roms inthere, all as your user, then run mame

I'm running MAME 0.193, here's how I added my rom directory (in Leap 15.0):

    Select "Configure Options"
In the "Settings" dialog that opens, select "Configure Directories", then "ROMS", then "Add Folder"

Browse to your rom directory to add it
    Desktop : Leap 15.1 | KDE Plasma | AMD Phenom II x6 1035T | 8 GB Memory | Integrated Radeon HD4250 | Ext4
    Laptop: Leap 15.2 | KDE Plasma | Intel Core i5 3rd Gen 3320M 2.6GHz | Intel HD Graphics 4000 | 8 GB Memory | Ext4

    No luck yet.

I added the rom folder from the other mame through MAME, and I am 99% sure it worked. That directory is now also listed in mame)

But this mame does not seem to like the roms I have.

I think i will go on the hunt of new roms.

I will not give up until, I can play again pacman donkey kong, space invaders, galaxian and galaga, and maybe my favourite Robotron, but I still need to find a way to connect two (Atari ST) joysticks to my pc for this game.
The original arcade machine had two joy sticks, one is the direction you walk, the other one is the direction you shoot.

I've had some luck with this website:
    https://www.emuparadise.me/roms/gamebrowser.php
    Desktop : Leap 15.1 | KDE Plasma | AMD Phenom II x6 1035T | 8 GB Memory | Integrated Radeon HD4250 | Ext4

Thank you will give it a try.

For now gonna remove the roms folders, and make a new one with just one rom in, and try again. ( from emuparadise )

Already downloaded robotron and pacman from a different site, with no luck.

Also again found a statement that roms belong to a certain MAME version, but it did not explain on how to check this.

I know I had these problem before, its why I stayed with that old version with roms, but since is messes up my desktop on windows and Linux that's not longer an option.

I might have found a simple solution for the fact that robotron needs two joysticks. Found a site on how to use a ps3 controller on Linux.
    This controller has two joysticks.
