Thread: what happens to updates if installed old gcc?

  1. #1

Default what happens to updates if installed old gcc?

I installed gcc 5.5 from a community repo because the gcc 7.3 breaks some old software I use. I did this on a bare-bones installation of Leap 15 (without the standard gcc compilers).
Now the morning after, when the sofware updates come up, the list of available items includes
    libgfortran3 version 6.5.0
    Is this okay?
I de-selected it and got all the other updates.

We can't know. But ..... your choice is yours. I personally would never break system integrity to get software running, but rather have a good look at this software.
Unless you give us more info, we won't be able to say something decent or supportive about this. If it was up to me I'd see that the 'old' software builds on the current OS.

° Perfection is not gonna happen. No way.

Using gcc is a non=shot event.
Once something has been compiled, there is no longer a relationship with the compiler that was used,
Unless the application is re-compiled, the app won't be affected by changes in gcc.

I don't know your reason for asking about libgfortran, it's likely a library that may or may not work with what you may have compiled, but won't change your compiled binaries in any way by itself.
