Question KDE desktop is freezing partially

    Hi,

since around two weeks, I have problems with the KDE desktop. After login, the desktop appears and following errors occur:
    - the icons are "dead" and not reacting. Clicking them and starting a program is not possible
    - some file icon on the desktop normally showing the content (e.g. pdf content) are only shown as normal icon (e.g. pdf symbol)
    - right click on desktop is possible, but changes to desktop have no effect
    - kicker is working, starting program from the menu is possible

Sometimes the effect disappears when starting again or log off and log in again. Ctrl-F1 and then Ctrl-F7 to go back to desktop does not change the behaviour of the desktop.

Did somebody observe the same strange KDE desktop behaviour?

    Best,

    Michael

This typically is the result of not using 'zypper dup' for upgrading Tumbleweed. If you used other methods ( updater applet, YaST ), run 'zypper dup' first, then see if the issue persists.

    Code:
    zypper dup
is the only supported way to upgrade Tw.

    Hi Knurpht,

I normally update with zypper refresh and then zypper dup.

I'm searching for a solution to repair the broken KDE desktop.

    Best,

    Michael

I found an interesting post on the same topic: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=151747

Here, the solution was: do not place any icon in the bottom (I had the trash bin icon at the bottom). Let's see if this solution works.

A thing I'm curious about is whether the issue exists for a freshly created new user. If it doesn't, that would mean the culprit is in the settings in your homedir, If it's the same the issue is in the system.

Now, I made some reboots and the problem did not appear again.

When I login in my separate root account, the problem does not appear, also not when moving an icon to the bottom.

A general observation: moving icons on the desktop is a mess, it does not work well. In most cases the icons jump back to the old position. Therefore, for the most icons I need several attempts to move them.

Don't ever login as root on a desktop environment. Not 100% sure, but this could very well be causing issues you have as a normal user.
