    Boot stops at command line, will not go to desktop. 'root'->enter passwordCan't use 'mkdir' to mount a drive, read only partition. Can't mount BTRFS partition.

    BTRFS file system included, System defaults used on opensuse leap 15 - kde. Snapshots enabled,

    This 5th time this year opensuse has failed shortly after install. That happened after I started using BTRFS on my partition. Before BTRFS, Linux was always stable for a year. Updated to next opensuse. Stable for a year. etc.

    Boot from opensuse dvd - 'rescue system'.

    #mkdir temp

    #[mount btrfs partition]

    #cat /proc/cmdline

    BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/x86_64/loader/linux splash=silent rescue=1

    delete snapshots:
    Code:
    snapper delete (from pre)-(to post)
    (from pre) and (to post) ist the numbler of the first command, you want to delete.

    reboot.

    My fault.

    Boot into an working snapshot, login as root,
    Code:
    snapper rollback
    reboot.

    After that, thread #5.

    I had to hand copy this output and hand type it in. So, there maybe errors in it. Boot from hard disk.

    #cat /proc/cmdline

    BOOT_IMAGE=/root/vmlinuz-4.12.14-lp150.12.22-default root=/dev/mapper/system-root resume=/dev/system/swap splash=silent quiet showopts resume=/dev/system/swap splash=silent quiet showopts

    I was half-right BTRFS file system was increasing the number of writes on a failing hard drive.

    I used the smartmon tools, after looking for failing hard drive info on the net.

    Results include:
    3 pre-fail
    All others: old-age.

    Should I continue or get a new hard drive? I noticed a pattern in the failures.The installs were failing in shorter and shorter time periods. My research was matching data on failing a hard drive.

    Personally, I would get a new drive. Best not to monkey around with a failing drive.
    openSUSE Leap 15.1; KDE Plasma 5;
    testing Leap 15.2Alpha
