Thread: In Leap 15.1, both Live and Install only offer GNOME and KDE

    Default In Leap 15.1, both Live and Install only offer GNOME and KDE

    In Leap 15, if I wanted something other than GNOME or KDE, I'd have to use the Install DVD instead of the Live one. But Leap 15.1 Install only offers GNOME and KDE. Is this a temporary oversight or has openSUSE dropped support for the other desktops?

    You can install whatever you want easily if you install using the Net ISO. KDE and Gnome are both available from a DVD installation. Everything cannot fit the DVD. You can enable other/online repos to enable others, or add them after booting the installation, such as "Generic Desktop", chosing neither Gnome nor KDE.

    Thanks for the responses.

    I forgot about the network install. I switch back-and-forth between distributions and I never remember which ones have everything in the DVD and which ones require network install.

    Select the generic desktop.

    Then, later, when you are presented a summary page, click on "Software". It the software selection, you can select whichever desktop patterns you want.

    If using the install DVD without the online repos, I think the only additional choice is XFCE. If you enable the online repos (the default), then you should be able to select MATE, LXQt, LXDE and possibly some others (in addition to XFCE, Gnome and KDE).
    openSUSE Leap 15.1; KDE Plasma 5;
