Thread: Game freeze or low fps

  1. #1

Post Game freeze or low fps

Hello, after a clean installation when wanting to play anything, I saw that I have very low fps (20-25). But if I install "Mesa-dri-nouveau-32bit" these increase and the games work as in windows or manjaro, but after starting the game or even instantly, I freeze opensuse so that no combination of keys, I have to cut the power and restart. Is there a way for the games to be as fluid but without installing this package?

PS: all the games I run on the main monitor. Even the problem of my PC freezing, sometimes happens with the GIMP

    My computer:
    I5 3570
    Monitor princial hd2500 (onboard)
    Secondary monitor gt 8500
    16gb ram

    Sorry for my English.

I know your english is limited, and you mentioned
    Monitor princial hd2500 (onboard)
    Secondary monitor gt 8500
which I interpret to mean that your PC is using hybrid graphics. See if this advice works for you....

Optimus (hybrid) graphics hardware requires special drivers as explained in the post I linked to.

I will try to make an effort to be clearer with my English.

Your interpretation is correct, I use two monitors with different gpus. Now I try the link you suggested to me.

I come from Mnajaro, where I had the same problem and unfortunately I could not solve it with the Optimus drivers. Finally only the nvidia gpu worked.

    Thank you.

Ok, but before you try them, this does only apply if we're talking about a laptop machine, not a desktop machine.

Oh. Yes, it is a desktop computer.

I was looking to buy a better GPU to manage both monitors. My options are a gtx 1050 2gb or a rx 560 4gb. Which one do you recommend that has the most support in Linux?

As a laptop user, I can't really comment on that, (both should be ok though). We'll see what others recommend...

FWIW, I had a quick look at the specs of both, and also this phoronix review - not much in it, but I did note that the GTX 1050 ran cooler and used slightly less power the RX 560, during their testing.

    I had a Nvidia gtx 1050 2 gb.
I was tired to install nvidia driver after a kernel upgrade. And i want to use wayland.
So I changed with an Sapphire RX 560 2gb.

AMD GPU pro: it have the driver in kernel so that you don't need to install it after a kernel upgrade.

AMD GPU cons: my card is an UEFI one and I have an HDMI monitor. It did not work with CSM enabled in BIOS (black screen) only with UEFI. So, after a BIOS update (I have a Ryzen CPU so I update often) I need to change to a DVI monitor and change the BIOS from CSM to UEFI.
Screen is flickering if you logout and login (X11 and Wayland). I did not find a solution to stop that yet. The only solution is to change resolution and the flickering is gone.

I did not want what DE you use. KDE did not support wayland very fine yet. Only Gnome.
So if you really want to use wayland (and Gnome) buy an AMD GPU.
In any other situation - Nvidia. My opinion is that Nvidia has a better driver (even if you need to install it after a kernel update).

PS. I did not know how RX 560 works with a DVI monitor.

    Hope that helps.
