Default Applications closing without warning and no journal output for current boot

I have just updated my Leap 42.3 laptop with some 500+ packages. On rebooting it and starting Waterfox and Thunderbird the applications start ok but suddenly they close without warning. On trying to see what is amiss from the journalctl command I get nothing showing up at all for the latest boot, just old data from ages ago. I was using a console window with an active command (journalctl) running and it tried to close but at least asked if I wanted to stop the current command. Also the Network Manager systray applet displays really peculiarly. Something is very wrong after this update. Zypper shows no errors.

    Anyone any ideas please?

Just found one more thing, it seems like the application window closes when the mouse pointer enters the top window border.

    Need to know:

Updated? How? ... as in, how did you do the update, using zypper, or ???

How long since you last updated? That many updates in 42.3 is very unlikely.

    Show us the output of:
    Code:
    zypper lr -d
... and, please, when you post that output, include the line with the above command, and *most important*, post that output between Code Tags in the Forum Post Editor, use the # icon in the editor menu.

The last time I updated it was the start of May. I updated as I always do from a console window using zypper up.

    Code:
    zypper lr -d

Since I use the additional KDE repos I suspect it is an incompatibility between those and Leap 42.3 although this has never happened before as I have used these since I installed 42.3 just after its release.

    That would be my guess.

Possibly you are using something from the 42.3 repos that needs to be moved to the additional KDE repos. But that's also just a guess.

For myself -- if it were important for me to have the very latest KDE, I would be using Tumbleweed rather than Leap. But, of course, you may have good reasons for avoiding that.

I have two laptops which both run 42.3 with the KDE repos, only one I have tried updating so far. I do have TW on a desktop. Initially I tried TW on this laptop but at that time it did not like my Intel I7 processor (I think) anyway there were issues with TW on it so that's why I went Leap and added the KDE repos, and until now it has actually been less troublesome than the desktop with TW. I did try to zypper dup it back to vanilla Leap but it came up with so many issues I gave up. I might put 15 on it as soon as it releases (next week?). I'm pretty sure its a plasma issue from the problems I'm having.
