Thread: Can't execute .exe files

  1. #1

    Default Can't execute .exe files

I can't execute an exe file on tumbleweed. I had just recently installed tumbleweed on my Toshiba Laptop, and i was going to download some stuff off of Ninite.com
I was able to download the file, but the only program i have the can open it is Archive Manager. Archive Manager opens the exe file and does not run it. How can i run a downloaded and extracted .exe file?

I guess that you mean with a .exe file a binary executable for Windows.

Linux is not Windows and Windows is not Linux. These files have no special meaning in Linux. But it seems that for some reason it is detected as an archive. Therefore some archive program tries to extract files from the archive. Which of course fails.

    Hi
I'm guessing your wanting to install applications (linux ones), for
this, openSUSE has YaST Software Management and zypper from the command
line (there is also gnome-software if using Gnome).

Perhaps a list of applications your wanting to install would help, also
for multimedia applications, there is a third party repository for this.

afaik wine is installed by default on opensuse so just run that exe with wine
    Code:
    wine /path/to/exe.exe
if you've already ran wine you could just click on the exe in you file manager (Dolphin or Gnome Files or what ever) and execute the exe
if that exe is in fact an self extracting archive open it with ark (archive manager in Gnome) and unpack the files in the archive
you should tell us some more info before we can actueally give a right awnser
as far as I can tell ninite.com is a software repository for win32 apps why not use native linux apps
you can search for apps in
    https://software.opensuse.org/
    or browse
    https://www.linux-apps.com/
    https://store.kde.org/

I'm pretty sure that it is not installed by default. You need to select it to be installed.

I haven't done a clean install in years I just did a zypper dup for LEAP 15 and wine was still there working fine too
but I think the OP is downloading zipped windows apps and doesn't know how to execute them

I usually do clean installs. I don't remember "wine" ever showing up, except when installing from the "linux for education" live media.

Apparently ninite.com (referenced by the OP) offers a service to install and update Windows applications: as such it won't work on openSUSE (or any Linux) and installing wine just to run it is useless IMHO.
@PandaR : some of the applications you are interested in might have a Linux version or Linux functional equivalents; you just need to realize that installing/updating applications on Linux involves procedures different from Windows.
If you are new to Linux, just quote a few applications you are interested in and we (as in "forum volunteers") may help you find the linux equivalents and install/update them.

You don't - Linux is not Windows, and EXE files are for Windows.

(Some applications can run using a piece of software called WINE, but
    that's a more advanced configuration)
