Thread: Howto configure firewall for Synergy and share names?

Default Howto configure firewall for Synergy and share names?

I don't know howto configure firewall for Synergy and for discovery of my samba shares via share names.

Synergy is on port 2800. I tried this in Yast panel:

but it does not seem to work.

The other problem is with Samba shares. When firewall is on I can connect to them using exact IP address, but can't use share names (for example my share is named "homeshare"). Discovery of shares via file manager also does not work when the firewall is on.
Both work when I stop the firewall.

Can anyone help me out? It is not the first time I'm facing issues with this - I'm definitely missing something even though I've read some posts on the forums. Seems my past windows habits where you choose the app that you wish to "pass" though firewall + ability to see which ports the apps want to use are a roadblock for me. Can't figure it out on Linux.

    Hi
I use synergy across multiple machines, your looking in the wrong place as synergy provides the service file. So go back to the main screen and under allowed services dropdown synergy is in the list, select and press the add button, then save (next) to apply the change.

Again, in the same dropdown, select Samba Client for your samba shares.

Thx Malcolm. Sadly I don't see Synergy in the dropdown list (I use 1.8 as version 2 was really giving me a hard time - and judging from topics on Synergy forums I'm not the only one). That's why I've been trying to add it manually. Will check whether it will show up after reboot.

Also the Samba issue is something else. I have it enabled in the panel you show. I doubt that without it enabled I'd be able to access Samba by using IP address. It is just that I can't use share names and share discovery in the file explorer does not work. And I have to admit that OpenSUSE is not the only distro where I struggled with it.
    So obviously I'm missing something.

edit: did a reboot and as suspected, don't see Synergy on the services list and samba is already enabled:

    Hi
Hmm I'm running 1.7.4 the default for openSUSE Leap 42.2 and on the
    Tumbleweed machines 1.8.8.

Is there a file called synergy in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2.d/services/?
    It should contain;

    Code:
    ## Name: Synergy
    ## Description: Synergy allows screens from different hosts to be linked together as one virtual screen

    TCP="24800"

Added the file in the /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2.d/services/ and it didn't help. Still I need to stop firewall, wait a couple of seconds for a client to connect and start it again. Super annoying.
Is there any data I could provide to help in nailing this one down?

Can the thing that client is a virtual machine have anything to do with it? Is there a linux tool that would allow me to see which ports actually are being accessed?

As for Samba - I've noticed one thing. If I switch back to Wicked accessing via names seem to work. Is there a way to make it work with NetworkManager? I get that Wicked is in many areas superior, but as there are no integrations with desktop environments I don't think it is a good choice for machine used as a desktop.
(Oh, and just in case - currently the tests with Synergy I'm doing are with Wicked running).

    Hi
I'm using network manager on the server to connect to a mixture of
wicked and NetworkManager. How is the VM network configured, I normally
use a bridged device and the VM with a static ip address, I don't use
DNS (I could since they are FQDN's), just /etc/hosts with ip and
    FQDN/shortname.

For samba, I'm guessing you need to ensure the hosts have netbios
running and samba server/clients configured to use it.... (not a samba
    guri...)

ouch... how do I configure those?
I've noticed that after switching to Wicked I lost internet in the VM and my local network. I can ping the host, but not my router , not any of the computers in my network, not any of the things on the internet. Arghhh...
And I still wonder how can I set it up so Synergy will work with firewall enabled?

    Hi
Well you need to manually add the DNS and gateway addresses on the two
tabs, DNS/Hostname and Routing when using wicked... For example I don't
use my ISP DNS but openDNS which are 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222.
the gateway address is your router ip.....

Well something is funky, because like I say...works for me... So just
add the port on the host TCP 24800 is the default.

Thank you Malcolm for the patience. I'll double check but I think that I found which setting has caused issues on my end. Following description on your end I compared it with mine - I've noticed that network on my VM has been set up to virtual network. Switched it to bridged connection (use host) and it seems to solved the problem. Will do the reboot and double check. Fingers crossed.
