Application Launcher

Hi all, I hope I can describe my problem somewhat descent for you.
I had no problems so far with my install except here and now a plasma hang-up requiring a reboot, not to often.
Since 2 days however I can not use my Application Launcher / Menu anymore
When I click on it it will open yet when I scroll over the different sections (Utilities,System,Office etc) the fold-out only appears briefly.
I can also not type in the search form in that menu.
Similar when I try to try to get/add a widget after open the desktop menu and unlock to add the wiglet only flash yet I can not grab and drag onto desktop.
I assume there is also a connection to the issue starting 2 days back that after reboot my wiglets before on right side of screen appear unsorted spread over desktop
My system info is on screenshot, I run several instances of activities as replacement for the formerly available multiple desktops.
I’m not a opensSuse pro but use it for many years and usual find solutions here or googeling and with advise/guidance get things running yet this time I seem to be lost.

Try a different user. (create testuser maybe if needed)

Sounds like problems in your configs in your home

OK, I’ll try that and report back

@gogalthorp - I did add a testuser in Yast, logged out and log back in as testuser.
Problem is the same
Any other suggestions?
I may like to add that my system in general the last 2,3 week losing performance, right-click > open with needs long time now, same renaming files,
I no see a large consumption sin system monitor, plasmashell using 3-5%, recoll index on and of 3-5%
If I recall it started after the last update with kernel that required a reboot

Try booting with the previous kernel (advanced selection in Grub menu)

@gogalthorp: I did try 4.4.90 - 28 and one further back 4.4.87 - 25, both the same ie unchanged.
I’m back to 42.3 / 4.4.92 - 31
I assume there is a connection between the menu failure and the slowing of my system in general.
I can hear my machine working hard, however, I no see anything in system-activities.
I took a screenshot it’s here https://i.imgur.com/rcVR0Q0.jpg as I still did not figure out how to attach/insert a image here.
Maybe it does give you some idea?
Otherwise I have 2 “tweaks” in system, month back - running with no problems until 2-3 weeks back, the file that determines temp files delete set to delete all temp files after 1 day at reboot >>> https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/512010-how-to-set-cleaning-of-tmp-folder-during-boot
and a few days back I also set rendering backend to XRender as described in this post >>> https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/512842-Leap-42-1-KDE-very-slow-working-speed

@gogalthorp: Also I seen your remark in another post about to many kernels - I do have plenty myself, may there be a conflict and how do I get rid of the older ones, how many should I keep??
I look up and provide info asked in that other post you commented in.
Maybe this helps some.

Looks like your nvidia kmp is not built for the running kernel. If all is well you should be able to use OpenGL rendering. Please post output of

zypper lr -d

Here you go, thanks for looking into that

Well, nothing wrong with that repo list.
BTW, you can check which kernel packages are installed by

rpm -qa | grep kernel-default

and next remove older packages by

rpm -e 'full kernel package name her incl. version nos'.rpm

Another thing to consider is whether your root filesystem is ( almost ) full.

Can you mark which one to remove or from bottom up until number please? I feel comfortable to do things under guidance, not a “geek” here… just a “weekend warrior”

Normally only 2 kernels are kept. Did you turn that feature off??. Keep that latest 2 should be ok.

21 gig should be fine for root partition

@gogalthorp: What “feature” you talking about?? I no recall turning anything of.
I down load a torrent, burn a disc and upgrade, do so since 13.1, do all the updates when they come in, install a few extra programs and thats it. I no dig with system if I no have to. And if only with advise / guidance or after lengthy research.
Only 2 tweaks are delete of temp files after 1 day & set set rendering backend to XRender as described in this post >>> https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/512842-Leap-42-1-KDE-very-slow-working-speed

I try today delete a few of kernels with furthest away number with

rpm -e 'full kernel package name her incl. version nos'.rpm

as suggested by Kurpht
If I do

rpm -e 4.4.85-22.1.x86_64.rpm

I get “error: package 4.4.85-22.1.x86_64.rpm is not installed”
If I do

rpm -e 'kernel-default-4.4.85-22.1.x86_64'.rpm

I get same

Any advise / pointer where to look, what to do??

In /etc/zypp/zypp.conf line with multiversion.kernels = determines number kept

default there are two but when a new one is installed there will be three until the next successful boot to the new one when the oldest will get removed.

This file would be kept across upgrades so if changed in the past it would not get changed due to an upgrade

I copy section out of that, I assume you mean this??
I never changed anything here at all.
How would I edit/change that? My limited knowledge tells me it/s not activated with # in front.
Where are the numbers on how many to keep or what do I add.
At next reboot it should delete all others or at next upgrade?

## Whether dist upgrade should remove a products dropped packages.
##
## A new product may suggest a list of old and no longer supported
## packages (dropped packages). Performing a dist upgrade the solver
## may try to delete them, even if they do not cause any dependency
## problem.
##
## Turning this option off, the solver will not try to remove those
## packages unless they actually do cause dependency trouble. You may
## do the cleanup manually, or simply leave them installed as long
## as you don't need the disk space.
##
## Valid values: Boolean
## Default value: true
##
# solver.upgradeRemoveDroppedPackages = true

##
## Packages which can be installed in different versions at the same time.
##
## Packages are selected either by name, or by provides. In the later case
## the string must start with "provides:" immediately followed by the capability.
##
## Example:
## kernel - just packages whith name 'kernel'
## provides:multiversion(kernel) - all packages providing 'multiversion(kernel)'
## (kenel and kmp packages should do this)
## Valid values:
## Comma separated list of packages.
##
## Default value:
## empty
##
multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel)

The section you want is a few lines past that which you posted.

## Comma separated list of kernel packages to keep installed in parallel, if the
## above multiversion variable is set. Packages can be specified as
## 2.6.32.12-0.7 - Exact version to keep
## latest - Keep kernel with the highest version number
## latest-N - Keep kernel with the Nth highest version number
## running - Keep the running kernel
## oldest - Keep kernel with the lowest version number (the GA kernel)
## oldest+N - Keep kernel with the Nth lowest version number
##
## Note: This entry is not evaluated by libzypp, but by the
## purge-kernels service (via /sbin/purge-kernels).
##
## Default: Do not delete any kernels if multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) is set
multiversion.kernels = latest,latest-1,latest-2,running

The last line determines how many kernels are retained, (in this case three).

You may want to check also using “yast” “services manager” that the “Purge-Kernels” service is active.

@tannington: Thanks for pointer, I did tweak the file so it looks same as example posted, it was set to

##
## Default: Do not delete any kernels if multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) is set
multiversion.kernels = latest,latest-1,running

“Purge-Kernels” service was disabled and NOT active.
I enabled and start it.

Now I got this in kernel list

kernel-default-devel-4.4.90-28.1.x86_64
kernel-default-devel-4.4.92-31.1.x86_64
kernel-default-4.4.90-28.1.x86_64
kernel-default-4.4.92-31.1.x86_64

Rebooting now and see how machine performs and if initial problem also got solved wit that

Ok, machine seem to boot much faster now.
However, my initial problems remains same.
When I click on “Application Menu” the menu pop up, when I go and hoover over one of the available selections
like “Utilities” the fold-out menu appears for a split second
If I try to type some in the search field I never make it past 2,3 letters and gone.
It is like the menu is constantly refreshing.
Same when unlock desktop and try to add a widget, they all pulsing but I can not drag them over to desktop.

Also observation, while System Activity the CPU % show +/- like in screenshot I posted earlier I managed to get a
CPU load Monitor widget in desktop with highlight it and keybord hit enter
It shows system and cpu0 to cpu7

cpu0 hangs around 50% most the time, even when I no use the machine and have no programs running or dynamic websites open in browser.
This used to be not the case formerly so somethings is going on.

Wondering, is there somewhere a setting that determines desktop refresh rates??
Could there be a relation to my wireless mouse/keyboard?
Kinda weird that I’m the only one having that problem.
