Thread: Vuescan - bus error core dumped

Default Vuescan - bus error core dumped

Since the last updates of Leap 42.2, if I try to use VueScan, the application crashes as soon as I start scanning and I get "bus error (core dumped)".
I reported the problem to the program author and he suggested to move to Ubuntu.

Any suggestion? Shall I abandon OpenSuse after many years?

It's proprietary software, so support should come from the vendor. Perhaps there's some dependency issue eg incompatible library version causing this.

You could examine library dependencies with the following perhaps
    Code:
    ldd /path/to/vuescan
*Make sure you use the actual path to the executable of course.

    Thank you for your hint,

I sent the output of ldd to the Vuescan support.
As this software is compiled on Ubuntu I think that upgrading to OpenSuse Leap 42.3 won't help, correct?

I have no idea. Wait to see what they advise here. I'd be surprised if there are not openSUSE users using this software successfully though.

Just to say that I do use Vuescan but on Tumbleweed, last used last week with no problems on my usb connected scanner. I doubt I had the very latest version though. I will test again later in the week to see what happens on the latest version and report back if not resolved by then.

I solved the problem. The disk partition containing the /var directory was filled up by snaphots. I removed the snaphots and the Snapper package and now VueScan can write its temporary files without crashing.

Users with relatively small disk space should be warned about this issue with Snapper.

Good catch.... I have just re-installed my TW without BTRFS and Snapper so should not have that issue anyway.
