Thread: External HDD acting crazy

    Default External HDD acting crazy

Hi. I can not express otherwise rather than external HDD acting crazy.

I have an external HDD which I plug into my laptop via USB were I put all my movies. I use it with the laptop and TV.
It has being working fine forever until today in the morning.
When I plug into the laptop now it gives me permission to pass a file to it only within a few seconds, after a wile it does not allow me doing anything with any file in the entire disk.
It is like it looses permission to write or something, but the permissions seem to be fine, 'read and write'.
What bugs me more is that if I unmount the device and mount again it works for a few seconds again before not allowing me to do **** again.
It is easy to spot when I loose permission because appears a red locked padlock under every file within the few seconds it takes to block me up.
Before anyone ask me it happens only with this one HDD. If I use any of my others it works fine, even pen drivers work perfectly. Can my HDD be ending its lifetime?

I find hard to research a problem like this. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

Could be maybe run smartctl on it.

    man smartctl for details

    Thanks for the idea.
I understand smartctl checks the life condition of my device.
I tried smartctl, however I think it looks normal, correct me if I am wrong.

Default Re: External HDD acting crazy

    I have solved the problem.
I do not understand why yet, but when ever I assessed one particular folder my entire HDD became inaccessible as I described on first post.
Realizing that I deleted the son of an angel. I am reentering the files (about 10 movies) one by one, I may find something else.
    But problem solved.
    Thanks for the attention.
