Default Multimedia Guide for openSUSE Leap 42.3

    openSUSE Leap 42.3 Multimedia Guide

    Revised and Simplified manual Method
This assumes you already have the default repositories.

*NOTE* You need to become su - in a terminal
Become super user in a terminal (su -). Learn how here

STEP 1: Add Packman and libdvdcss repositories

    Code:
    zypper ar -f http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_Leap_42.3/ packman
    Code:
    zypper ar -f http://opensuse-guide.org/repo/openSUSE_Leap_42.3/ libdvdcss
    Now do
    Code:
    zypper ref
    (a) to accept always and trust the signing key

    FOR General Use

    Code:
    zypper install libdvdcss2 ffmpeg lame gstreamer-plugins-libav gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-ugly-orig-addon vlc vlc-codecs flash-player flash-player-ppapi libxine2 libxine2-codecs

If you face choices. Look carefully for the option to let the package/s switch from openSUSE > packman

When done. Close the terminal. And open Yast > Software Management and Apply the Package Switcher on Packman Repo

    KDE: http://paste.opensuse.org/92222495

    Gnome: http://paste.opensuse.org/71856337

If you encounter dependency errors: You need to accept changes that allow vendor switch to Packman If you can't work it out. Ask in the forum.

    IMPORTANT NOTES:

    1. This multi-media install should provide the basics for all desktop UI's
    2. Please do not use the VideoLan repository!
    3. OneClick options will be available here: Restricted formats - openSUSE Community Wiki

Thanks a lot Carl. Since the rest of the zypper commands is already there,
    Code:
    zypper dup --from Packman\ Repository
    might be nice to include.
° Appreciate my reply? Click the star and let me know why.

° Perfection is not gonna happen. No way.

vlc-codecs is missing from the list, but as you have vlc-codec-gstreamer vlc will use gstreamer instead of libvlc for playback
vlc will work as a gstreamer frontend

    Yes
However, to be totally accurate my letter are all lower case: packman and not Packman, I think that matters

    May I ask why not?

The versions available in the VideoLAN and Packman repositories seem to be the same, but should I "switch system versions" to those in Packman, or alternatively upgrade using Packman with the VLC repository disabled?

You should only use from Packman since they may get out of sync. Of course you need to have one or the other set as vendor and never use zypper dup for updating

The VLC repo only provides VLC and some basic necessities to go with it
Packman provides VLC plus a whole multitude of other stuff
The two repos added to the same system will conflict
You can use the VLC repo alone, if you can live with that minimal provision.
Otherwise, if you want a broad range multimedia experience, then I suggest using just Packman
You can add other repos with Packman, just not ones that are multimedia oriented
    Hope that makes sense

I found that vlc-codecs depends on vlc-codec-gstreamer,and vlc-codec-gstreamer will Turn vlc into a gstreamer front end.
    So,if I want to use "pure vlc-base player",I can't install "vlc-codecs".Is that right?
