    Question Create MyPhoneExplorer WinePrefix in TW.

    Hello

    My Tower currently runs Maui but i am very seriously considering migrating it to TW. I've been testing TW in VMs on Tower, & now also my reformatted Lappy, & have been progressively overcoming various challenges. One of the last challenges is to be able to resolve how to mimic in TW what works brilliantly in Maui... creation & usage of a WinePrefix to run MyPhoneExplorer. Note that if i could find a Linux GNU/FOSS functional-equivalent of MPE i would drop this idea & just use a native Linux program with my Android, but so far i've not found anything as good as MPE.

    These steps are what works in Maui [or any generic *buntu/Debian distro]:
    Code:
    WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winecfg

    sudo apt-get install winbind winetricks

    WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winetricks vb6run

    WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' wine MyPhoneExplorer_Setup_v1.8.8.exe

    Hence this is what i was going to try in TW:
    Code:
    WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winecfg

    sudo zypper install winbind winetricks

    WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winetricks vb6run

    WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' wine MyPhoneExplorer_Setup_v1.8.8.exe

    But this is what happened in one of my test TW VMs, & i chickened out, pending expert advice if available... pls?
    Code:
    linux-sr0s:~> WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winecfg
    If 'winecfg' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
        cnf winecfg
    linux-sr0s:~> cnf winecfg

    The program 'winecfg' can be found in the following package:
      * wine [ path: /usr/bin/winecfg, repository: zypp (repo-oss) ]

    Try installing with:
        sudo zypper install wine

    linux-sr0s:~> sudo zypper install wine

    That is more a zypper question than one about wine. Yes, there is a conflict for wine-mp3 between OSS and Packman. I would suggest just adding --no-recommends to your zypper call as that would remove wine-mp3 from the install list. Never had any use for it, anyway. You could alternativly lock the package, disable Packman repo, or just ignore the conflict and go ahead. After all, you are doing it in a VM, so just snapshot it beforehand and see if things break.

    As for wineprefix, that should work just as you intend it to. Though I would use absolute path in WINEPREFIX.

    Actually the wine package in Tumbleweed comes with mp3 support since some time, and that's what causes the conflict.

    So, there is absolutely no reason to install wine-mp3(-32bit), and you shouldn't do it at all.
    I.e. I concur, the best solution here is to use --no-recommends (or lock/taboo wine-mp3-32bit).

    The wine-32bit package doesn't obsolete wine-mp3-32bit though, that's an oversight that has been fixed already, but the updated package is still pending legal review.

    Aha, the --no-recommends option; very handy for me to have now learned... thank you both.

    Here is the new Konsole transcript. Your advice took me nicely beyond that earlier stopping point, but i reached a new
    stopping point later on. Two critical packages were not found [as you can see below]. When i did this in Maui a few months ago, they were found, with no intervention needed by me, & so the installation then proceeded smoothly to completion without me needing to troubleshoot. Now, in openSUSE, with my ignorance on plain show, for a problem like this, i don't yet know enough to understand how to "find" those missing items.
    Code:
    linux-sr0s:~> WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-myphoneexplorer WINEARCH='win32' winecfg
    If 'winecfg' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
        cnf winecfg
    linux-sr0s:~> cnf winecfg

    The program 'winecfg' can be found in the following package:
      * wine [ path: /usr/bin/winecfg, repository: zypp (repo-oss) ]

    Try installing with:
        sudo zypper install wine

    linux-sr0s:~> sudo zypper install --no-recommends wine

    Those packages do not exist in openSUSE.

    winetricks is part of the standard wine package, no need to install anything extra.

    No idea what winbind should be. Maybe you mean "samba-winbind"?

    Oh dear. This is sad. I think it might mark the end of my hoped-for migration to openSUSE from Maui... i cannot get by without being able to use MyPhoneExplorer in my OS [well, technically i could still fire up my Win10 VM & use it there, but each of the rare times i do return to Windows i feel like retching - & in Maui now, because of this successful WinePrefix, i basically never need to look at Windows anymore, which is a great relief].

    "samba-winbind"
    Well, i don't know. All i do know is what that transcript said.

    Oh well, i really appreciate your help to this point anyway. Thank you.

    As I wrote, winetricks is included in wine, you don't need to install it separately.

    And samba-winbind is available, I think that's what you mean with "winbind" (that's the only thing I find when googling for "winbind" anyway).
    Just to be sure, install also the 32bit variant.
    Code:
    sudo zypper in samba-winbind samba-winbind-32bit
    I have no idea whether MyPhoneExplorer works or not though, but I doubt that would be specific to the distribution...

    ...is that i am a big dope. After posting my last miserable words, & i suppose whilst you typed yours, i decided to ignore the apparent problem of the previous transcript & simply issue the next commands [per my earlier post outlining the necessary installation steps]. It all proceeded smoothly from that point, culminating in the successful installation of MPE, & i'm now looking at its GUI on-screen in the VM.

    This is fabulous, not only for MPE itself, but because of its larger significance -- resolving this was the final hurdle in my way, so now i can make plans to do the migration of Tower for-real from Maui to openSUSE TW KDE.

    Thank you so very much [& sorry for my previous negativity].

    POSTSCRIPT.

    culminating in the successful installation of MPE, & i'm now looking at its GUI on-screen in the VM
    That was true when i wrote it & remains true now. However... being able to view & operate the MPE GUI, including seeing all its historical SMS text messages, contacts database, & call logs is one thing, but then getting the GUI to synchronise with the actual Android phone to transfer the current data, is another. Unfortunately, so far at least, this important last part does not work.

    USB cable connections to Android devices for MPE synch require that the Android Debug Bridge (adb) tool is installed. In Maui this is simply available direct from the repos, & works well [ie, in my Tower's current Maui, with MPE installed in a WinePrefix, & android-tools-adb installed, everything works, including connection & synch]. In my TW Lappy, i used this https://software.opensuse.org/package/android-tools, but unfortunately the WinePrefix MPE GUI cannot detect the phone through the USB connection [the cable is fine; it's the same one i use for Tower/Maui]. Hence no synch is possible, which partly defeats the value of having bothered creating the WinePrefix in the first place.

    My unpleasant workaround has been to resort to something i hoped to avoid; whenever i want to actually synch my phone, i need to fire up my Win10 VM in TW & run MPE natively in that VM - then everything works... but the penalty is needing to touch Windows.

    Ironically there's actually also a subsidiary second penalty. In the context of my recent thread https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...42#post2828242, where i ended up learning that contrary to my previous misunderstanding i did not need to use the Oracle Extension Pack after all, i discovered tonight that the Win10 VM also cannot connect to the Android phone via USB cable, when the only USB protocol available is the USB1 which is all that's available without the EP.

    So, because of the failure of that one-click android-tools [or otherwise my incorrect use of it?] to allow the TW MPE WinePrefix to connect to / synch with the phone over USB, i have ended up having to rely on both the things i'd hoped to avoid in TW: Oracle Extension Pack AND the Windows VM. Ha, oh well.

    And which one did you install exactly?
    Code:
    rpm -qi android-tools
    It is available directly in the standard repos in openSUSE too.
    You can just install it in YaST or with "zypper in android-tools", no need to use an 1-click install or add additional repos.

    Never used it myself though.
